After graduating from Northwestern, she would work as a freelancer before landing a feature writing job at “Entertainment Weekly”. She often wrote about films, and was a television critic. but was eventually laid off in 2008. During her time with the company, she started writing novels, and released her first one in 2006 entitled “Sharp Objects”, about a serial killer and a reporter who returned home to cover the killings; it would win the CWA New Blood and Ian Fleming Steel Daggers awards. Her next book would be released in 2009 entitled “Dark Places”, about a woman who investigates the murder of her family, and if it indeed involved her incarcerated brother; the book was adapted into a film in 2015, and she made a cameo appearance in it.

In 2012, she released “Gone Girl” which is about a husband who searches for his wife who disappeared during their anniversary. The book would be adapted to a film as well, and would gain critical acclaim; the book also stayed on the top spot of the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Bestseller list for eight weeks, selling over two million copies, and rivalling the “Fifty Shades of Grey” books in terms of popularity. Her writings have contributed substantially to her net worth.

In 2015, she released a short story entitled “The Grownup” which was originally published in an anthology entitled “Rogues”; the story is about a sex worker who became an aura reader, and would win an Edgar Award in 2015. Aside from this, Flynn has written a comic book story “Masks” which was presented in the series “Dark Hose Presents”, and also scripts for the HBO adaptation of the British series “Utopia”. However, the project was cancelled in 2015 because of budget problems.

For her personal life, it is known that Gillian married Brett Nolan in 2007 and they have two children. They met while at Northwestern but didn’t start dating until their mid-30s. Flynn also mentions in an interview that journalism was an important step for her writing career, as she learned that you just have to write and not wait on a mood.
