Around this time, he did postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University in he Applied Physics Laboratory.

Moore started his career with Beckman Instruments as part of the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. However, he would soon leave the company along with other employees to found the Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation, which would become highly influential, although the eight members who left Shockley would become known historically as the “traitorous eight”.
