Greg Gumbel was the first child of Rhea Alice LeCesne, and Richard Gumbel, a judge. He is of Creole descent and grew up on Chicago’s South Side, where he went to the De La Salle Institute. Gumbel later studied at the Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated with a BA degree in English.

Before he started his career in journalism, Gumbel worked as a seller of hospital supplies in Detroit; his brother told him that Chicago TV station (WMAQ-TV) was looking for a sports announcer and Gumbel immediately applied for and got the job. He stayed there for seven years before he moved to work for MSG, ESPN, and WFAN radio in New York City. While at ESPN, Gumbel served as an anchor of the “Sports Center”, and also covered the “play-by-play” for NBA games. At MSG, Greg worked as a back-up announcer for the New York Knicks, and covered the college basketball in the meantime.

Gumbel started his CBS career in 1988 as an NFL announcer, and a year later he began covering college basketball as well. From 1990 to 1993, along with Terry Bradshaw he was a co-host of “The NFL Today”, which only increased his net worth, and also covered Major League Baseball(MLB), college football, and the Daytona 500 in 1999. Greg served as a prime-time anchor of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, and as a co-anchor of the 1992 Winter Olympics from Albertville, France, adding further to his net worth.
In 1994, CBS lost the rights to cover the NFL and MLB, so Gumbel moved to NBC where he hosted the coverage of the 1994 MLB All-Star Game. He also did play-by-play for the MLB and NBA in 1995, hosted the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, the 1995 World Championships of Figure Skating, and as the studio host for “The NFL on NBC”. He first served as studio host for the network’s coverage of college basketball and is still doing that in 2016, with his net worth still rising too!

The CBS bought back the rights for NFL package, so Gumbel joined the broadcasting team and covered Super Bowls XXXV and XXXVIII while was working on the NFL from 1998 to 2003. After the end of the 2005 season, James Brown took over as the new studio host, so Gumbel went back to the broadcast booth, which added a substantial amount to his net worth. Most recently, Gumbel has served as the #2 play-by-play man in 2015-2016 NFL season, as he replaced Dick Enberg.
