Born in Florence, South Carolina, Carson started playing American Football during his high school years. He started playing at Wilson High School and later on at McClenaghan High School from where he matriculated.

Carson was then able to continue playing in college football, at South Carolina University from 1972 to 1975; he played for four years straight and didn’t miss a single game. His dedication to football led him to be selected in 1975 as first team selection on the AFCA College-Division All America team. He was also later on inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

After college, in 1976 Carson was selected in the NFL Draft in the fourth round by the New York Giants. He spent all of his professional football years with the team, a total of 13 seasons, in 10 of which he served as the captain. He played for the team as inside linebacker, and became known as part of the famed Crunch Bunch, known in the history of NFL as one of the best defensive combos – Carson together with Brian Kelly, Brad Van Pelt, and Lawrence Taylor made up the famed defence. Carson also appeared in the Pro Bowl nine times throughout his career.

Probably one of the highlights of Carson’s entire NFL career was when he helped the Giants win Super Bowl XXI in 1986, the first for the team. Finally in 1988, he decided to retire from playing in the NFL, his career having tremendously increased his wealth.

Subsequently, Carson was also able to recount his experiences from the NFL through books. He authored two books – “Point of Attack: The Defense Strikes Back” and “Captain for Life”. The sales of his books have also helped in lifting net worth.

Carson also dedicated some of his time to broadcasting, appearing in CNN’s “NFL Preview”, ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America”, and “ABC Sports College Football”. He also started Harry Carson Inc., a sports consulting and promotions company through which he provides commentary on sports-related causes and also delivers motivational and inspirational talks. He works with the Fritz Pollard Alliance too, a group that helps represent minorities in the NFL from players to coaches, coordinators, and other personnel.

In terms of his personal life, Carson is married to Maribel, and together they have three children.

Carson is also a known philanthropist helping organizations such as The United Way, Boy Scouts of America, The Literary Council of New Jersey, MANetc, Inc., and Habitat for Humanity to name a few. He is also known to advocate Concussion in Sports, to help former athletes who suffered traumatic injuries after years of playing professionally.
