In 1991, he transferred to Boston, Massachusetts where he became a portfolio manager of Rampart Investment Management. In 1996, he obtained the Chartered Financial Analyst appointment while in 2002 Harry climbed to the position of the company’s chief investment officer. Two years later, he abandoned Rampart in order to completely focus on fraud investigations of Fortune 500 companies. All these engagements provided the basis for Harry Markopolos’ net worth.

Harry got his hands on Bernard Madoff’s revenues stream in 1999 for the first time, and immediately noticed several “red flags” in it. In 2000, he filed a complaint to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) but it did not bear any fruit, so he spent the next eight years investigating the Madoff case and compiling mathematical evidence as well as revealing illegal operations.
