As Hillary Clinton she is a politician, now best known for being the defeated Democratic Party’s nominee who contested the 2016 Presidential Election. However, she is also a former US Secretary of State, a position in the federal government primarily focused on foreign affairs, which she held from 2009 until 2013 under President Barack Obama; the wife of a politician, namely former US President Bill Clinton, and so was the First Lady of the United States from 1993 until 2001; and then she became a US Senator representing New York State from 2001 until 2009.
So just how rich is Hillary Clinton, as of late 2016? With husband Bill, their combined net worth is estimated at over $260 million.
Hillary Clinton Net Worth $60 Million
Hillary Clinton was educated at Maine East High School, and then transferred to Maine West High School during her senior year from where she matriculated. Even in high school, Clinton showcased an interest in politics and at one point even campaigned for Republican Barry Goldwater, who took part in the presidential election in 1964, partly encouraged by her Methodist and anti-communist up-bringing. A year later, Clinton began her studies at Wellesley College, somewhat more liberal in outlook, from which she graduated with a degree in political science. Both in college, and later in Yale Law School where she met Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton actively partook in politics. In 1975, she married Bill Clinton and moved out to Arkansas, where she established the “Arkansas Advocates for Children and Family” non-profit organization, and had a hands-on approach on various political matters. When Bill Clinton became the Governor of Arkansas in 1978, Hillary Clinton became the First Lady of Arkansas.
Hillary was always active in law, in various jobs taking on cases ranging from patent infringement to child advocacy – a particular personal continuing interest. She often refers to following her heart, not her head, in both personal and professional matters, and in the latter became a political liberal, championing civil and women’s rights. She was particularly effective, and learned the ways of political persuasion, while in Arkansas, which was to hold her in good stead in her future positions.
Except for the years 1981-83, her husband served as Governor from 1978-92, and then as US President from 1993-2001 – Hillary was the first First Lady to hold a post-graduate qualification – during which periods she was vocally proud of not being a ‘stay at home’ wife, even insisting on her name being officially Hillary Rodham Clinton. He president husband used her on National Health Care Reform task force, children’s health insurance program, and Welfare Reform Act, among other policy programs.
After this period, it was Hillary’s turn, and she was elected as Senator for New York State in 2001. Hillary had a hand in several crucial decisions that affected the whole country. When the United States suffered the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, Clinton actively supported the subsequent military action in Afghanistan, often referred to as “The War in Afghanistan”, which started in 2001 and continued until recently. During the Iraq War, Clinton travelled to Afghanistan in order to meet up with American troops. Even though Clinton was a strong supporter of the military action on Afghanistan, during her second term as a Senator she was opposed to the “Iraq War troop surge” suggested by then president George W. Bush, which would increase the number of American troops in Iraq.
When Clinton finished her term in the Senate, she decided to pursue a presidential campaign in 2008, which she lost to Barrack Obama who was then elected to be the President of the United States. A year later, Obama put up Clinton as a nominee for the position of the Secretary of State, which she was appointed to in 2009, serving until 2013, after which she began preparing for the aforementioned presidential campaign, officially beginning in 2015, and the result of which was ultimate failure.
Even though Hillary Clinton is best known as a politician, she has also established herself as a writer. She published her first book entitled “It Takes A Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us” in 1996, and the following year received a Grammy Award for the audio version of the book. As intimated earlier, she also embarked on a public speaking circuit, being paid well for her efforts such that it helped her net worth to grow substantially, to where it is today.
Hillary and Bill have a daughter, Chelsea, and together they established the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation in 2013, focusing partly on early childhood development but also the promotion of women’s rights among other causes. One suspects that her attention may well return to such civil causes now she seems to be out of public life.
