Lorne Greene Wiki/Biography

Lyon Himan Greene was born on 12th February 1915 in Ottawa, Canada, of Russian-Jewish origin, and was an actor, who became known worldwide for his role of Ben Cartwright in the television series “Bonanza”. Green was active in the entertainment industry from 1939 to 1987. Lorne passed away in 1987.

How much was the net worth of Lorne Greene? It has been estimated by authoritative sources that the overall size of his wealth is as much was $10 million, converted to the present day. Film and television were the major sources of Greene’s modest fortune.

To begin with, there is no information about his early childhood, until he graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

Concerning his professional career, Greene began his acting while studying at university. His sonorous voice also helped him to work as a news anchor on the Canadian radio station CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), where he soon became chief spokesman and the most popular newsreader in Canada – during the Second World War he was called The Voice of Canada. Additionally, he was a narrator for documentary films, an activity that accompanied him throughout his career. In the 1950s, he moved to the US to pursue a career in Hollywood as a film actor. At first he took minor roles, but he eventually got his big chance with a television series that was one of the most successful in the history of US television: in 1959 he was offered the role of Ben Cartwright in the television series “Bonanza”. With the role of the father of the Cartwright family, which he played until the end of the series in 1973, Greene became one of the most well-known faces on TV, including internationally, and which boosted his net worth considerably.

In 1964, the album “Welcome to the Ponderosa” was released – for the album, Lorne Greene recorded the song “Ringo”, scoring an international bestseller, as well as topping the charts in the US. In the 1960s, Greene recorded many music albums of country-western and folk songs, in which he played a mix of speaker and singer, adding to his net worth.

In the 1980s he turned his energies to wildlife and the environment. He was the host and narrator of Lorne Greene’s series “New Wilderness”, a program that promoted awareness about the environment. Moreover, Greene was known as a contributor to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of NBC. He is also deeply remembered as the founder of Toronto’s Academy of Radio Arts.

Meantime, the actor continued successfully with the TV series “Battlestar Galactica” (1978-1980) and in the feature film “Galactica 1980”. His last role was in the episode “The Appearance” in the television series” An Angel on Earth” (1985), once again starring with Michael Landon, his son in “Bonanza”. With his white hair, sonorous voice, and calm, superior charisma, Greene specialized in presenting morally infallible authority figures.

Finally, in the personal life of the actor, Greene was married to Rita Hands from 1938 to 1960, and they had two children. In 1961, he married Nancy Deale, with whom he had another child. He was close friend of the actors Dan Blocker and Michael Landon, two of his sons in “Bonanza”. His daughter Linda Greene Bennett wrote a biography of him entitled “My Father’s Voice: The Biography of Lorne Greene”. Lorne Greene died on 11th September 1987 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 72, suffering from pneumonia. He was buried at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.

#Fact
1Following his death, he was interred at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.
2He was the original inventor of the count-down clock that allowed a show, in filming, to know how much time was remaining in each segment of filming and in the total length of the show. This allowed the directors and actors to know how much time they had in which to complete a program or segment. His patent was the source of some wealth in the pre-computer era of filming.
3He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1559 North Vine Street in Hollywood, California on February 12, 1985 (his 70th birthday).
4Close friends with John Colicos, with whom he did a 1952 Canadian radio performance of Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness".
5He was the only actor to appear in every episode of both Battlestar Galactica (1978) and Galactica 1980 (1980).
6Once played George Washington in a short film produced for the National Park Service.
7He was scheduled to appear in a flashback scene using archival footage on the new Battlestar Galactica television series, but the plan fell through.
8Best remembered by the public for his starring role as father Ben Cartwright on Bonanza (1959).
9He was awarded the OC (Officer of the Order of Canada) by the Governor General of Canada on June 27, 1969 for his services to the performing arts and community.
10Biography in: "The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives." Volume Two, 1986-1990, pages 355-356. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1999.
11Pictured (as Ben Cartwright, his character on Bonanza (1959)) on one of four 51¢ Canadian commemorative postage stamps honoring "Canadians in Hollywood", issued 22 May 2006. Others honored in this set are John Candy, Fay Wray and Mary Pickford.
12Has two children: Belinda Susan Bennet (née Greene) and Charles Greene (both born 1945), from his first marriage.
13Died the same day as Peter Tosh.
14His daughter Gillian Greene (born 1968), is married to director Sam Raimi. One of the Raimis' sons is named Lorne, after him.
15Ben Cartwright, Greene's character on Bonanza (1959), was ranked #2 by TV Guide in its list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" [June 20, 2004 issue].
16Served, along with Betty White, as co-host of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC-TV for almost a decade, 1963-1972.
17Invited to play Ben Cartwright after a well-received performance as Big Brother in a CBS production of 1984 on Studio One in Hollywood (1948).
18Founded Toronto's Academy of Radio Arts.
19He was the Monday night host for CBS Radio's "Sears Mystery Theater" (1979). He was still Monday's host when it became "The Mutual Radio Theater" on Mutual Radio (1980).
20Just before his death, Greene had signed on to reprise the role of Ben Cartwright in a television-movie revival of Bonanza (1959).
21Had a #1 hit in the United States with his 1964 recording of "Ringo", a spoken-word song.
22When he was an announcer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in the early years of World War II, he was nicknamed "The Voice of Doom" for the combination of his deep voice and the usually gloomy news reports about the war he had to read.
23Received his Bachelor's degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 1937. He later received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university in 1971.
24Attended and graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, Ontario.
