Howard Stringer was born on 19 February 1942, in Cardiff, Wales, to Marjorie Mary, a teacher, and Harry, who was a sergeant in the Royal Air Force. He is best known as an American-Welsh businessman who served as a president and CEO for the Sony Corporation.

Stringer attended the University of Oxford, eventually graduating with an MA degree in modern history. He moved to United States in 1965, and having worked for CBS for six weeks, he joined the military in which he served as policeman in Saigon for ten months during the Vietnam War, and was eventually rewarded with the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service, despite not serving in combat. After discharge, he returned to CBS and continued working for them for the next three decades. He started off with by answering backstage ‘phones for The Ed Sullivan Show, but subsequently Howard became a journalist and his career began expanding.
He went on to work as a producer, followed by his job of a senior executive. Stringer spent three years working as a producer of ‘’CBS Evening News With Dan Rather’’. In May 1998, he took the position of company’s executive officer, and then from June 2005 until 2009, Stringer served as the CEO of Sony, and was taking care of the overall process of media and electronics subsidiaries, which included Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Music among other obligations, then went on to become the president of Sony Corporation, and became the president of Sony Broadband Entertainment Corporation in March 2000. Sony was having troubles in competing with companies such as Samsung, Apple and Panasonic, which resulted in Howard being promoted to the top position for the sake of returning credibility to the company. At that time, he was over-watching the release of the Spider-Man movie franchise, among others. In February 2012, Sony announced that Howard would step down from his position of CEO, and be replaced with Kazuo Hirai. In June of 2013, Stringer fully retired from working at Sony.
In his personal life, Howard has been married to Jennifer A. Kinmond Patterson since 1978, and the couple has two children together. He has a brother, Rob Stringer, who is the president of Sony Music Entertainment.
