Hozier is a son of a local blues musician, who influenced his early love for music. He attended St. Gerard’s School and later went to Trinity College, Dublin to study music. During his time there he became part of the Trinity Orchestra, and even performed with the choral ensemble Anuna. The group went on to tour internationally from 2007 to 2012, and Hozier was even featured in the song “La Chanson de Mardi Gras”, from a release entitled “Illumination”. However, Hozier eventually decided to drop school, with the chance to record demos for Universal Music.
In 2013, Hozier released his first EP entitled “Take Me to Church”, which included songs such as “The Codeine Scene”, “Like Real People Do” and “Angel of Small Death”. The song “Take Me to Church” became highly popular on YouTube and iTunes eventually promoting Hozier’s fame and net worth. After the success of “Take Me To Church”, he released another extended play entitled “From Eden” which had songs such as “To Be Alone” and “Work Song”. 1 | I think there is a difference between making music and writing songs, and to me the words are the core - that's where the character and the story is. I'm fascinated with what a song can be in the eyes of history, a snapshot of an era. You get an insight into cultural mentality and society's values, hopes and fears. |
2 | We are in a self-obsessed moment of mankind. Everything is marketed towards the idea of the self, but not the real self - rather, what you want people to think you are. Social media is an advertisement for the superficial extroverted self...The idea that people would spend some of their own human experience discussing the most trivial everyday experiences of somebody else's life I find strange and very sad in many ways. |
3 | I always loved in blues music how the devil can be a character who walks and talks, so awful,in your state that it seems to be a presence around you. I don't don't spend time thinking about the nature of God, but I'm interested in what people say about God, how it is used to control people and change policies in the physical realm. |
