Wiki Biography

Hugh Anthony Cregg III, better known by his stage name of Huey Lewis was born in New York City in 1950. He is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. Huey Lewis is perhaps best known as the leader of of Huey Lewis & The News, one of the most popular musical groups of 1980s. Apart from singing he is also known as an actor who has appeared in movies like “Duets” with Gwyneth Paltrow, “Short Cuts” and “Sphere”.

So just how rich is Huey Lewis? Sources have estimated that Huey has a net worth of $20 million, collected basically from his musical career, as well as from his acting occupation.

Huey Lewis Net Worth $20 Million

Lewis grew up in Marin County, California. His father was a jazz drummer and radiologist, and his mother, a commercial artist. He was only 13 years old when his parents broke up . He attended and in 1967 graduated from New Jersey’s Lawrenceville School. Lewis was a talented student and for his genius/charisma got an admission to the Cornell University, New York. However ,he took a pause and traveled across USA, focusing mostly on improvement of his musical skills. When Huey Lewis came back, he continued his education. Unfortunately his passion for learning disappeared and he left university by devoting himself to music.

A band called ‘Clover’ was the first step to his musical career. In 1971 Lewis became the member of the ‘Clover’. Playing harmonica and singing was the main roles Lewis did for the band. Unfortunately the ‘Clover’ broke up in 1978. In 1979, a band named “Huey Lewis and the American Express” was formed by Lewis. Very quickly the name of the band was changed to “Huey Lewis and the News”. Unfortunately the first debut album was unsuccessful.

Contrary to the first album, the second one, entitled ‘Picture This’ was brilliant and even nominated gold. The song “Do You Believe in Love” was extremely popular and became a hit.

The band’s 1983 album “Sports” was recognizes globally as one of best selling pop albums and had sold over 10 million copies of the album.

“Fore!” is the fourth studio album, released in 1986. Same as the “Sports” it was the best-selling album as well and such hits as “Power of Love”, “Stuck with You” and “Jacob’s Ladder “were at the top of other top 10 singles.

In 1990, the band recorded another great single ‘The Power of Love’. It was written for the blockbuster film “Back to the Future”.

Lewis started his acting career and performed in the movies like “Short Cuts”, “Sphere” .

In 2000, Lewis debuted in “Duets” in which he had an important role. He not only starred with Gwyneth Paltrow but also sang a hit single “Cruisin”, which later become a huge single as well .

In 2013, he took part in the American dance competition “Dancing with the Stars”. In 2013, the group released a 30th-anniversary edition of Sports.

He is now debuting in the Broadway musical Chicago, playing the role of Billy Flynn.

In 1983, Lewis and Sidney Conroy become husband and wife in legal ceremony. They have a daughter, Kelly, and a son , Austin. The couple split after six years together. Today Lewis and Sidney are still separated (not divorced).

#Quote
1A lot has been written and said about why he was so great, but I think the best way to appreciate his greatness is just to go back and play some of the old records. Time has a way of being very unkind to old records, but Elvis' keep getting better and better.
#Fact
1"The Power of Love" from Back to the Future (1985) earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
2His father, Hugh Anthony Cregg Jr., was an American of Irish ancestry, and his mother, Maria Magdalena, was from Warsaw, Poland.
3Has a small cameo in Back to the Future (1985), a film for which he also contributed two songs.
4Tattoo (Givin' It All Up For Love), on the Picture This album (Huey's second album), is a cover of a Phil Lynott song (whom he had played with prior to forming the News).
5Played as a backing harmonica musician for Thin Lizzy, and for their vocalist, Phil Lynott, on Phil's solo recordings. Lewis is the harmonica player on the now-legendary Thin Lizzy live album, "Live and Dangerous".
6Played in a band called Clover prior to forming the News.
7According to a Behind the Music (1997) interview, his favorite album he ever recorded was "Small World" (1988), which was a commercial failure.
8During an interview, he said that he learned how to play the harmonica while hitchhiking across Europe.
9Contrary to popular belief, Lewis did not forbid "Hip To Be Square" from being included on the CD soundtrack release of the movie American Psycho (2000) . He licensed the song for use in the film, but the producers failed to secure the appropriate rights to put it on the soundtrack, forcing it to be recalled and the song removed (though early pressings had already been shipped to stores and sold).
10Huey Lewis & The News won the British Phonographic Industry Award for International Group in 1986.
11The original name of his band was "Huey Lewis and the American Express". It was later changed to Huey Lewis & The News, due to legal reasons.
12On the song "Hip to be Square", from the album "Fore!", the backup singers at the end of the song include San Fransisco 49er stars Dwight Clark, Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana.
13Enjoys playing golf.
14Huey Lewis successfully sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarizing the medley to his song "I Want A New Drug". They settled out of court and agreed not to talk about the case in public. In 2001, Lewis talked about the case in public when he revealed that Parker paid to settle the suit on an episode of VH1's Behind the Music (1997). Parker then sued Lewis for violating the terms of their agreement.
15When the band "Clover" broke up, he formed Huey Lewis & The News, the so-called 80s Band.
16Attended Cornell University, majoring in engineering, but dropped out after his junior year, because he was in a band called Clover and they were preparing for rock stardom. Clover (minus Huey Lewis) provided the instrumentals for Elvis Costello's debut album, "My Aim Is True".
17Huey dropped out of Cornell University to spend a year living in Europe playing the harp.
18He has a brother named Jeff.
19His parents divorced when he was 13.
20In 1967 he graduated from Lawrenceville Prep at the age of 16 in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
21Scored a perfect 800 on his math SATs.
22Has two children, son Austin (born 1985) and daughter Kelly (born 1983).
23Attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA.
24He is the leader of Huey Lewis & The News.
