As a child, Ilan studied ballet, and developed his craft by attending the School of American Ballet on a scholarship. While studying there, he was discovered by a casting director, and was then cast in his first role in the film “Daniel”, playing the younger version of the main character; his film career had started, and more acting roles would soon come for him, with his net worth also starting to increase thanks to these opportunities. In 1984, he was cast as the star of the film “The Wild Life”, and the following year he played Wyatt Donnelly in the film “Weird Science”, which was directed by John Hughes, a film about two nerds who try to create their own woman due to their frustration in finding girlfriends. Over the years, Ilan took more roles, appearing in “Superboy” and “The Chocolate War”. He was also cast in 1989’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Identity Crisis”. After not finding much further success in acting, he then decided to end his acting career, making his final appearance in “Silk Stalkings”.

Mitchell-Smith then attended UC Davis, and would complete a degree in Medieval Studies, continuing to pursue the subject, getting an MA in medieval studies from Fordham University, and then attended Texas A&M to complete his doctorate. Afterwards, he worked as a professor at Angelo State University for several years, and his net worth continued to grow, as he then moved to California State University where he works as an associate professor.

He is also known for his written works, notably publishing material on medieval culture and the later Middle Ages. In 2012, he returned briefly to acting, specifically voice acting for two episodes of “Axe Cop”.

Ilan is also known for publishing the highly popular tabletop game “Dungeons & Dragons”. He is also a staff writer for Talk War-gaming, and writes for Forces of Geek in a column entitled “Playing the Nerd”. He is very active in the tabletop industry, and organizes events in Southern California. He has also worked with several independent game producers.

For his personal life, it is known that Ilan married Susannah Demaree in 1995; the couple met while at Santa Monica College, and they have two children.
