Hall was raised in Chicago, Illinois and attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City in Iowa. Prior to becoming an actress, she taught foreign languages and English at a public high school. Irma made her debut in the movie industry when landing a role in an independent film called ‘’Book of Numbers’’ at the relatively advanced age for that career, when she was 36. However, she wasn’t actually intending to pursue career in the acting industry until Raymond St. Jacques saw her performance at a poetry reading, and went on to appear in one of his movies and played in theatre as well in the forthcoming years. Her career was developing and the number of appearances she made was continuously increasing, along with her net worth.

Hall eventually caught the attention of the media when she took a starring role in ‘’A Family Thing’’, a 1996 drama film, with her performance as Aunt T, a kind elderly woman earning Irma her first critical acclaim in the acting world. Due to her notable acting skills, she received two awards: the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Chicago Film Critics Association Award. She played a supporting role in many movies during the 1990s when her career was at its peak. Her big breakthrough was, however, in the film ‘’Soul Food’’ in which she played Mother Joe/ Big Mama – the movie grossed over $43 million at the box office and the result of its success was a spinoff ‘’Soul Food: The Series’’, with Irma’s acting skills again up to scratch and positively received by the critics, with her talent widely recognized at this point, and boosting her net worth.

However, Hall’s career was still in progress, and she eventually landed another notable role in ’’The Ladykillers’’, a 2004 dark comedy thriller film, playing the lead role of Marva Munson, and gaining public acclaim for her performance. Until this role, Hall would usually play supporting parts, but the portrayal of Munson changed the path of Irma’s career, as it earned her a special Jury prize at one of the most prestigious movie festivals, at Cannes, and an Image Award given by the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Due to the continuous growth of her career, throughout the 2000s, Irma remained an important persona and made a name for herself. As of 2017, she appeared in six episodes of ‘’Harp and Leonard’’ as Meemaw, and has now played in a total of over 30 movies and more than 40 television series roles.

In her personal life, Hall lives in Dallas, Texas. She has two children but details of their father(s) is/are unknown. In 2004, she was in a car accident, and had an open heart surgery due to the injuries to her aorta and a broken rib.
