James was born to Shirley and Anthony Chetwynd Purefoy. At the age of 16, he abandoned Sherborne School and began working on a pig farm, but later landed a job at Yeovil District Hospital. At the age of 18, he attended Brooklands College before enrolling at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Among some of his first stage roles was the leading role in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, and in 1988, Purefoy became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and subsequently appeared in its productions such as “Macbeth”, “King Lear”, “The Tempest”, as well as “The Man Who Came to Dinner”. All these engagements helped James Purefoy to establish himself as a prominent actor and provided the basis for his net worth.

Purefoy’s on-camera debut occurred in 1990 when he was cast for the leading role of Mike Baker in TV drama series “Coasting”. This was followed with several other supporting roles in TV movies and series, such as “Rides”, “Calling the Shots” and “Tears Before Bedtime”. Setting his career on a rising path, by the end of the 1990s, Purefoy began appearing in more demanding and more memorable roles, including a bisexual guy in “Bedrooms and Hallways” (1998), an alcoholic laborer in the 1999 comedy drama “Mansfield Park”, as well as a womanizer and a gambler in “Woman Talking Dirty” (1999). He had also portrayed some major roles in TV series “The Prince and the Pauper”, and “The Tenant of Wildfire Hall”. It is certain that all these involvements helped James Purefoy to boost the total size of his wealth.

In 2001 he was cast for the role of Edward, the Black Prince, opposite Heath Ledger in “A Knight’s Tale” while in the following year, alongside Milla Jovovich he starred in Paul W. S. Anderson’s Sci-Fi horror movie “Resident Evil”. Although he was cast for the leading role in the 2005 thriller based on Alan Moore eponymous graphic novel “V for Vendetta”, due to creative differences he was replaced by Hugo Weaving. However, later that year, James got his breakthrough role of the Roman Empire’s significant person Marcus Antonius – Mark Antony in HBO’s TV series “Rome”, while in 2006 he portrayed Captain Edward “Blackbeard” Teach in the TV movie “”Blackbeard: Terror at Sea”. Doubtlessly, these accomplishments massively increased James Purefoy’s net worth.

In 2009, James appeared in “The Philanthropist” TV series, and portrayed the title role in the action fantasy movie “Solomon Kane”, while in 2011 he starred in “Kamelot” and “Injustice” TV series. These were followed by notable appearances in the sci-fi action adventure movie “John Carter” as well as in “Revenge”, “The Hollow Crown” and “Episodes” television series. Between 2013 and 2015, James portrayed a serial killer and the lead antagonist of FOX’s TV drama series “The Following”, while since 2016 he plays the main character Hap Collins in the “Hap and Leonard” TV series. In the 2017 biographical and historical war drama “Churchill”, James appears as King George VI. All these ventures have helped James Purefoy to add a significant amount of money to the total of his wealth.

When it comes to his personal life, James has married twice – between 1996 and 2002 he was married to fellow colleague, actress Holly Aird with whom he welcomed one child, while since 2014 he has been married to director and producer Jessica Adams with whom he also has a child. When not filming, with his family Purefoy resides in Somerset, England.

1The first job I ever did was Equus on stage, as the boy, and I was 17, and we opened the show with me naked in the spotlight being examined by doctors. That was my entrance to the stage, so anything after that was easy. Also, for some reason, nudity was never shameful, it was never brought up in my household when I was a kid, there was no 'dirty, dirty sex'. It's not like we all ran around naked in some horrid 70s nightmare, it just was never an issue, and because it was never an issue I've never been embarrassed, I guess.
2"Ah, nudity. That's quite a recent thing, the nudity. It's come in the early autumn of my career." (Jan. 2006)
3If you find yourself always playing the villain, or if you find yourself being typecast into a corner where you're not happy then that's probably rather miserable, but if I have been typecast I am reasonably happy about it as what Ive been typecast as ain't so bad"
4The age of chivalry isn't dead, is it? It doesn't even have to be a man or a woman that you could be chivalrous to. If somebody's in trouble you give them a hand.
5In the July 4, 2001 Newswatch, Wild West End column: "There was one woman whom I was absolutely infatuated with, but she had no interest in me. I was very young at the time and thought the way to prove my love was to write a book for her. It ran for pages and pages and I had it bound in leather to give to her. But it still didn't have the desired effect."
1James Purefoy has moved out of his Hammersmith, London home, which he shared with actress Holly Aird, and their son, Joseph. [May 2002]
2Lived with Fay Ripley for more than a decade.
3James' co-star in Rome (2005), Kevin McKidd, also played his love interest in Bedrooms and Hallways (1998).
4He was cast as the leading man in V for Vendetta (2005) but departed halfway in having had creative differences with the makers of the film.
5He has a son named Joseph born in 1997 with ex-wife Holly Aird.
6The name, Purefoy, is originally Norman French and literally means "good faith" or "my word or bond is in good faith." Some Purefoys went to England during the Norman Conquest and others emigrated to England as French Huguenot expatriates in the fifteenth century.
7Screen tested for the Bond role in GoldenEye (1995).
8In 1997, Purefoy was voted "hunk of the year" by a British television magazine.
9At boarding school, he once serenaded the girls at a nearby school with thirteen stanzas of "Greensleeves."
10At his Somerset home, Purefoy personally constructed a tree house for his young son.
