Jared attended La Jolla Country Day School, and finished high school in three years with multiple honors. After matriculating, he attended Princeton University to earn a degree in politics. He started his career in business, co-founding the American Information Systems (AIS) while he was still in college – the internet access provider was sold in 1998. He also co-founded a free electronic greeting card website, Blue Mountain which was later sold for $430 million in stock and $350 million in cash, increasing his net worth significantly. In 1998 he founded ProFlowers, an online florist located in La Jolla, which was later renamed to Provide Commerce, Inc. and went public in 2003. Two years later, it was bought by Liberty Media Corporation for $477 million, again raising Jared’s net worth considerably.

Polis started his career in politics in 2000, when he became a member of the Colorado State Board of Education; he served there for a single six-year term until the district was eliminated, also serving as Chairman and Vice-Chairman during this period. In 2006, he then served as the co-chair of “Coloradans for Clean Government”, and the following year he co-chaired the “Building for our Future” campaign. In 2008, he then tried his hand at the US House of Representatives, and won a heavily contested primary before going on to win the general election; he would continue to get re-elected in the next six years. He’s the chair of the Red to Blue program for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and helps raise money for Democratic candidates. Other committees he’s a part of include education, rules, and natural resources. He is considered one of the 10 richest members of the United States Congress thanks to his business endeavors.

For his personal life, it is known that Jared has two children with his partner Marlon Reis. He is one of the few openly gay people elected in the US House of Representatives, and is the first gay parent in Congress. He also enjoys video games. He founded the Jared Polis Foundation which aims to create more opportunities for educators. The foundation has helped create several programs, including donating more than 3,500 computers a year to schools as well as non-profit organizations. He has founded two charter schools as well. In 2006, he was named Outstanding Philanthropist for the 2006 National Philanthropy Day in Colorado. He also received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Humanitarian Award and the Anti-Defamation League’s Inaugural Community Builder Award.
