Jason became interested in wrestling at an early age, and when he was seven years old commenced his amateur career. While in high school he continued to wrestle, but after matriculation, he enrolled at Indiana University from which he obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology, and minors in chemistry, medicine and social science. During his college years, Jason wrestled for the university team, competing in the 285-pound weight class despite his 225 pounds, particularly using his quickness, and in his senior year he was undefeated the whole season, amassing a record of 35 wins.
While in college, Jason attracted the attention of Gerald Brisco, WWE’s road agent, and in 2010 he was summoned for a tryout and was eventually given a contract, but Jason wanted first to finish his college degree before a professional career.
