He had difficulty in the industry despite honing his craft, and apparently due to low pay and lack of respect, he became addicted to alcohol and drugs. It wasn’t until nine years later that he got over the addiction and sobered up. He then returned to his comedy roots and embarked on a style similar to that of Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Cosby. He’s made numerous television appearances including in the special “Happy Wife, Happy Life” which boosted his popularity and net worth. Since then he’s performed in other locations, including shows for troops in Bahrain and in the Indian Ocean. He also became a guest in “Premium Blend”, “Standup Spotlight”, and “Just for Laughs”. He’s starred in national tours and is regularly heard on Sirius XM Radio.

The success of “Happy Wife, Happy Life” led Allen to create a film remake in 2005 called “Happy Wife, Happy Life, Revisited”, and his net worth increased even more thanks to the success of the film. Other film projects he has been a part of include “The Bananas Comedy Special”, “Thou Shalt Laugh”, and “My Heart, My Comedy”. He’s also released comedy albums including “Three Word Vocabulary”, and has also done written work for various publications. From 2006 he had a column “Living with Teenagers” which was published for three years, and subsequently two other columns in “Homelife” and “Homecoming”. He also released a book entitled “My Life as a Bystander”, and thanks to all of these endeavors, his net worth continued to increase.

He was an atheist but became a born-again Christian as part of his recovery from addictions. He’s been very active in charity work and is one of the early supporters of the Bridge Ministry. In 2012, he then worked with Gestures Generosity which provides financial services around the world; the organization has been responsible for intervening in human trafficking.
