Jeff Garcia was born as the third of seven children of Bob and Linda Garcia but his family suffered a few tragedies when four of the children died in early age, so Jeff only has two surviving sisters. He grew up in California and went to the Gilroy High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball, and after his graduation in 1988, Garcia enrolled at the local junior Gavilan College.
In 1990, Garcia transferred to the San Jose State University and played for the Spartans until 1993, and is still the player with the most offensive yards in San Jose history – 7,274.
