Born Jermain Colin Defoe on the 7th October 1982, in Beckton, London England, he is a professional soccer player, who currently plays as a striker for the English Premier League side Bournemouth, after previously playing for such teams as West Ham United, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland.

Of Dominican and Saint Lucian ancestry, Jermain grew up in Canning Town, but once the family returned to Beckton, Jermain started playing five-a-side football at Newham Leisure Centre, and later became a part of the Sunday league team Senrab, also known for launching such stars as John Terry, Ashley Cole and Lee Bowyer, among others. Then when he turned 14, Jermain was subsidised by the Charlton Athletic soccer club and selected for the FA National School of Excellence at Lilleshall, Shropshire.
