Jerry Sloan Net Worth $3 Million

Jerry Sloan was the youngest of ten children, and grew up in Illinois, being educated at McLeansboro High School, from where he matriculated in 1960 as the school’s best basketball player. While studying at the Evansville, the Baltimore Bullets selected Sloan as the 4th pick overall in the 1964 NBA Draft, but he stayed in college and graduated in 1965.

Jerry debuted in the NBA in 1965, but after only one season, the Bullets traded him to the Chicago Bulls, where he became one of the leaders, and immediately led them to the playoffs. During his ten years in Chicago, Sloan was known for his excellent defense and was an influential figure in the team, but after a series of knee injuries, he retired in 1976, recording an average of 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. The Bulls retired his #4 jersey in 1978, making Jerry the first ever Bull with a retired jersey in the franchise’s history.

Sloan decided to stay involved with basketball and took a coaching job at his former college Evansville, but resigned after only five days – coincidentally, that was the year when the coaching staff and players from Evansville died in a plane crash at Evansville Airport. In 1978 he became the assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls, but in the next season, Sloan got the head coaching job in the Windy City. However, Jerry didn’t experience a great time during his three-year stay, as he recorded 94 wins and 121 defeats, managing to take the Bulls to the playoffs on only one occasion. The Utah Jazz then hired him as a scout, while from 1985 to 1988, Sloan served as the Jazz’s assistant coach. In 1988, Sloan was promoted to the head coach of Utah, following Frank Layden appointment as the team’s new president. Jerry coached the Jazz for astonishing 23 seasons, leading them to 16 consecutive playoffs in the ‘90s and 2000s, and working with such players as Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Jeff Hornacek, among many others. His net worth reflected his success.

Although Sloan and Utah reached the NBA Finals twice, Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls defeated them on both occasions (1997 and 1998) in six games. Following Malone’s and Stockton’s retirement, Jerry worked with a new group of players such as Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko and Deron Williams. Along with his former point guard John Stockton, Jerry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2009. In February 2011, Sloan and his assistant Phil Johnson resigned, speculation being that Sloan’s disagreements with Deron Williams led to that decision. Williams denied the story, but was traded to the New Jersey Nets only two weeks later, while Tyrone Corbin became the Jazz’s new head coach. Jerry recorded 1223 wins while at Utah, and the Jazz raised a banner with that number to honor him in 2014. At the moment, Sloan works as a scouting consultant and adviser for the Jazz.

Regarding his personal life, Jerry Sloan was married to his girlfriend from high-school Bobbye from 1963 until her death in 2004, and has three children with her. Two years later, Jerry married Tammy Jessop, and they reside in Salt Lake City. Sloan was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease in April 2016.
