Jerry Sloan was the youngest of ten children, and grew up in Illinois, being educated at McLeansboro High School, from where he matriculated in 1960 as the school’s best basketball player. While studying at the Evansville, the Baltimore Bullets selected Sloan as the 4th pick overall in the 1964 NBA Draft, but he stayed in college and graduated in 1965.
Jerry debuted in the NBA in 1965, but after only one season, the Bullets traded him to the Chicago Bulls, where he became one of the leaders, and immediately led them to the playoffs. During his ten years in Chicago, Sloan was known for his excellent defense and was an influential figure in the team, but after a series of knee injuries, he retired in 1976, recording an average of 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
