Jim Jackson went to Macomber High School in Toledo, and started for four years for the basketball team, leading them to the 1989 Division I state. From 1989 to 1992, Jim studied at Ohio State University, where he played for the Buckeyes, immediately becoming a key player as a freshman with 16.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. During his college days, Jackson was awarded consensus First Team All-American honors in 1991 and 1992.
The Dallas Mavericks selected Jackson as the 4th pick overall in the 1992 NBA Draft, but he appeared in only 28 games in his rookie season due to a lengthy contract dispute.
