Jim spent his early years in Harlingen, Texas, splitting time between Texas, and California where his mother lived. Jim’s father passed music interest to him, as he was also a guitarist. Once Jim turned five, he got his first guitar, and since then has never dropped it from his hands.

As he got older, Jim’s ambitions increased, and when he was 16 years old he formed his first band, Jim Messina and His Jesters, releasing one album “The Dragsters“ in 1964. The album spawned one hit single “The Jester”, which was later included on the 2003 CD “Lost Legends of Surf Guitar Volume 1”.

After the group fell apart he joined Buffalo Springfield, originally as their recording engineer and producer for their last album “Last Time Around”, but also played bass on two songs on the album.

After the disbandment of Buffalo Springfield, Jim and Richie Furay, one of the founding members of Buffalo Springfield, formed country rock band Poco. Joined by Rusty Young, George Grantham, and Randy Meisner, they released their debut studio album in 1969, entitled “Pickin’ Up the Pieces”. He stayed in the band for two more albums, “Poco” (1969), and “Deliverin’” (1970), which is a live album. He left Poco, as he was tired of constant touring, and wanted to focus more on record producing.

He then struck a friendship with upcoming musician Kenny Loggins, and the two worked together until the mid ’70s, when Kenny decided to venture out on his own, but during their years together, they released nine albums, including “Sittin’ In” (1971), “Loggins & Messina” (1972), “Full Sail” (1973 – which reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart – “Mother Lode” (1974) which landed on the No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and a compilation album “The Finale” (1977).

Jim then launched his solo career, and in 1979 released his first solo album “Oasis” through A&R records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records. However, Don Ellis didn’t like Jim’s new music, as it was a mixture of latin jazz with a rock edge, so he signed with Warner Bros. Music, and since then has released five more albums, including “One More Mile” (1983), “Under a Mojito Moon Part-1” (2009), and the live album “Live at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts” (2012), the sales of which increased his net worth significantly, accompanied by the XD and DVD entitled “Jim Messina LIVE at the Clark Center”, and is also a creator of the “The Songwriters’ Performance Workshop”.

Regarding his personal life, Jim is married to Michaela, with whom he has a daughter,. Previously, he was married to Jenny Sullivan from 1970 until 1980. Jim also has a son born in 1992, but the mother remains unknown in the media.
