Born in New York City of part-Irish American descent, but raised in Illinois, Cusack is the daughter of Nancy and Dick and has four other siblings, all of whom are actors; one in particular is Hollywood actor John Cusack. Cusack honed her talents when she trained with the Piven Theatre Workshop. Later she joined Story Theatre and The Ark, where she learned and performed improvisations. She later went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated with a degree in English.

Her acting career started in the ’80s where she starred in minor supporting roles in “My Bodyguard”, “Cutting Loose”, “Grandview, U.S.A.” and “Sixteen Candles”.
