Nemechek attended the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, but his racing career started when he was 13 years old in motocross. By 20, he had won over 300 trophies, establishing a decent reputation and popularity. In 1986 he entered stock cars races, and went on to score wins in every series in which he participated. The following year he won the Southeastern Mini Stock Series, in 1988 captured the U.S.A.R. series and then the All Pro series in 1989, becoming All-Pro Late Model Rookie of the Year. All contributed to his net worth.

Later that year, he made his Busch Series debut at North Carolina Speedway, then earning Busch Series Rookie of the Year honors in 1990. Two years later, he took the Busch Series championship title; his popularity was boosted and his wealth greatly increased. He also won Most Popular Driver award later that year and again in 1993, while also making his Cup debut at New Hampshire International Speedway with his NEMCO Motorsports team.

In 1994 Nemechek entered the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and began driving for Larry Hedrick Motorsports, switching to SABCO Racing in 1997, and then winning the first two pole positions of his career, at California Speedway and Pocono Raceway. (The same year his brother, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver John Nemechek, died in an accident at Homestead-Miami Speedway.) Joe went on to capture his first career victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 1999, the first major milestone of a promising career. All added to his fortune.

The following year Nemechek joined Andy Petree Racing, scoring his second major win – the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 at North Carolina Motor Speedway. He then drove for Hendrick Motorsports, claiming another victory, this time in the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway in 2003. A year later, he joined MB2/MBV Motorsports, and went on to take the Bud Pole award for the NEXTEL Cup race. Shortly after, he captured wins in both the Busch Series and in the Nextel Cup Series, the first driver to achieve so. His wealth grew larger.

Nemechek then drove for E&M Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing, before taking his NEMCO Motorsports team back to the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series in 2009, 2011 and 2012, achieving impressive results.

In 2014 he joined Michael Waltrip Racing and went on to break the all-time Sprint Cup Series record for the most last-place finishes. He later raced for teams such as Deware Racing Group, Randy Humphrey Racing and Front Row Motorsports, but failed to capture any significant wins.
Nemechek’s long racing career has included competing in numerous races in NASCAR’s major series, which has enabled him to achieve considerable fame while posting 20 wins and a sizable net worth. He continues racing in the Camping World Truck series in 2017.

When it comes to his private life, Nemechek is married to Andrea, with whom he has three children, including son John Nemachek, also a professional stock car racing driver.
