After high school, Joey enrolled at Colorado State University, where he continued to play football, and was one of the best players of the Colorado State Rams. He received several awards, including selection into the First-team All-WAC, and third-team All-American. He graduated with the major in exercise and sport science, and entered the 1999 NFL Draft; he was selected as the 73rd pick overall, by the Pittsburgh Steelers. This marked the start of his professional career, and an increase in his net worth, as he signed a contract, however, details were undisclosed.
In his first season with the Steelers, Joey played in all 16 games, recording 10 tackles on his own, and three assisted. After the first season, his numbers began to increase, and in the second season he recorded 41 tackles, and 18 assisted. Joey`s game numbers steadily increased, and in 2002 he recorded 88 tackles and 9.0 sacks. That year he signed a contract extension with the Steelers, increasing further his net worth. He stayed in the team until 2007, when he was released by the club.

After Miami, he spent two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, signing a contract worth $24.5 million over three years, which also increased his net worth. He opted out from the last year of his contract, and signed a one-day contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he wanted to retire as a Steeler.
