Johanes Hendrikus Hubert de Mol, Jr. was born on 24 April 1955, in The Hague, Netherlands, and is a media tycoon, a well-known personality in the Netherlands best known for being responsible for the productions companies Talpa and Endemol. John started his career as a producer of television shows, and helped develop the reality television series “Big Brother”, with his company John de Mol Produkties and which proved highly popular. In 1994, the company merged with Joop van den Ende to create Endemol. He then helped produce “Fear Factor”, “Deal or No Deal”, and “1 vs. 100” for Endemol. In 2000 he sold his share of the company to Telefonica, but still served as the creative director of Endemol until 2004. His net worth was already very high at this point, and the following year he was listed in Forbes Magazine’s 500 richest people in the world.
In 2004, De Mol then founded his own television station initially called Tien, but was launched under the Talpa brand, meaning mole. Eventually the company was rebranded to Tien after a name dispute with SBS Broadcasting ended. The station had poor ratings however, and in 2007 the company was shut down and sold to RTL Nederland, although John still retained a share in the company.
He also sold Radio 538 to Nederland, which was one of his acquisitions. The companies still continue to produce programs such as the successful “Ik Hou van Holland”. In 2007, John returned as one of the main shareholders of Endemol, which increased his net worth further.
Three years later, De Mol launched the new reality competition series “The Voice of Holland” which was very successful in the Netherlands, and the show was sold to countries around the world too, including leading to America’s “The Voice”. In 2011, he bought the Dutch activities of SBS Broadcasting from the German broadcaster ProSiebenSat 1 Media; he did the deal alongside media conglomerate Sanoma. He then sold his rights in RTL Nederland to the RTL Group, but retained ownership of Radio 538 and its sister stations.
Outside of television, John has a large private equity fund which once held significant shares of the car manufacturer Spyker Cars. He also held shares in the telecommunications company Versatel.
For his personal life, it is known that John was married to actress Willeke Alberti from 1976 to ’80, and their son is actor Johnny de Mol. De Mol’s sister is actress Linda de Mol who’s appeared in several Endemol’s programs such as “Deal or no Deal”.
