Dodson is of mixed Filipino and African-American descent; initially raised in Albuquerque, John and his family later moved to Edgewood, New Mexico, where he went to Moriarty High School and started participating in sports such as football, track and field, and wrestling, becoming a two-time state wrestling champion during his teenage years. After matriculating from high school in 2003, John enrolled at the University of New Mexico, and it was at this point that Dodson started training in MMA, after he was recruited by Greg Jackson and Chris Luttrell based on his wrestling experience. As he fell in love with this sport, John continued training on a daily basis and even won in a Grappler’s Quest beginner level competition, later returning to win the tournament at an intermediate level. Apart from competing against flyweight opponents, Dodson also began taking fights at featherweight and bantamweight categories. In a match against future WEC fighter Clint Godfrey, John won the fight and having previously obtained a 3–2 record, he was selected to participate in the second season of “The Tapout Reality Show“.
