John McCarthy was born on the 12th October 1962, in Los Angeles, California USA, and is a mixed martial arts referee, best known for working in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. McCarthy is also a licensed boxing referee, and is a founder of C.O.M.M.A.N.D., a certification school and training course for MMA judges and referees. His career started in 1985.

In the early 90’s, John trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Rorion Gracie, and McCarthy asked Rorion to give him a chance in the UFC, but Gracie decided to utilise his experience in law enforcement and set him as a referee.

In 1994, John had his UFC debut at UFC 2: No Way Out and stayed a regular ref until 2007 when he stopped this career to become a television commentator for The Fight Network and Affliction. However, McCarthy returned as a referee in 2008, and handled numerous important fights, including at the K-1 Dynamite! card at the Osaka Dome in Japan between Akebono Taro, a Sumo legend, and Royce Gracie, an MMA legend in 2014. He was also the ref at the UFC 194 between Connor McGregor and Jose Aldo in December 2015. Since February 2015, John McCarthy has worked with Sean Wheelock on their new weekly podcast called “Let’s Get It On with Big John McCarthy & Sean Wheelock”. John also appeared in the movie “Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown” (2012) starring Evan Peters, Michael Jai White among others, and in the martial arts documentary “Fight Life” (2013), all of which added a substantial amount to his net worth.
