John McCarthy was born on the 12th October 1962, in Los Angeles, California USA, and is a mixed martial arts referee, best known for working in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. John McCarthy grew up in California, and became a police officer in 1985 when he joined the Los Angeles Police Department, following the steps of his father, Ronald. In the early 90’s, John trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Rorion Gracie, and McCarthy asked Rorion to give him a chance in the UFC, but Gracie decided to utilise his experience in law enforcement and set him as a referee.
In 1994, John had his UFC debut at UFC 2: No Way Out and stayed a regular ref until 2007 when he stopped this career to become a television commentator for The Fight Network and Affliction. However, McCarthy returned as a referee in 2008, and handled numerous important fights, including at the K-1 Dynamite! card at the Osaka Dome in Japan between Akebono Taro, a Sumo legend, and Royce Gracie, an MMA legend in 2014.
