John attended the University of California, Davis, studying film and geology. After graduating, he then decided not to pursue either, and would go on to train for professional wrestling at the Supreme Pro Wrestling School. He failed during his first audition for “Tough Enough 2” but eventually got into “Tough Enough III” in 2002, and would win the competition alongside Matt Cappotelli. He was given a development contract to attend Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).
He made his debut on the Raw brand in 2004, under the ring name “Johnny Blaze”, which he soon changed to “Johnny Nitro”, even using the “WCW Monday Nitro” theme as his entrance music. However, he had to return to OVW which he won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship once. Eventually, he was called back to the SmackDown! Roster, and made his debut with wrestlers Melina and Joey Mercury, winning the WWE Tag Team Championship in their debut match. They would carry the title for three months before losing to the Legion of Doom (LOD) at The Great American Bash, but won the championship twice more before moving to the Raw brand. There he was placed in the Intercontinental Championship picture, and held the belt for four months before losing it to Jeff Hardy. He also had a feud with John Cena, before in 2007 being sent to the ECW brand.
He won the vacant ECW World Championship in a match against CM Punk, and then changed his name to “John Morrison” tweaking his gimmick to be more conceited. He eventually lost the championship to Punk, and would then compete against the Miz. They then became a tag team and would win the WWE Tag Team Championship in SmackDown! They had several successful title defenses before losing the titles to Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder, but John and Miz won the “Tag Team of the Year” Slammy Award in 2008, and would win the Raw World Tag Team Championship afterwards.
