John Salley was raised in Brooklyn, where he attended the elementary school. He started showing interest in basketball and playing while he was at Canarsie High School, after which he continued education at the Georgia Tech’s College of Management, from which he got a degree in 1988. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. While Salley was in college, he established the college blocked shot record and received third-team All-American selection as well as gaining the rare honour of having his number retired..
Selected by the Pistons in the first round of the 1986 NBA Draft, he played for them until 1992 when he was traded to Miami Heat. During his time with Pistons, Salley won two NBA Championship rings, in 1989 and 1990.
In 1992 he signed a contract with Miami Heat, but he wasn`t required after three seasons, and was sent to Toronto Raptors in 1995., but decided to buy out his contract, and subsequently signed with the Chicago Bulls, and in his first season won third NBA Championship ring, alongside Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen among his teammates, adding further to his net worth.
