Johny attended Edmon Memorial High School, and was a three time Oklahoma high school wrestling state champion and two time national wrestling champion during his time there. After matriculating, he would attend Oklahoma State University and had a 10-0 redshirt season in 2003. The following year he had a 37-7 record and would later win the Big 12 Title in 2005 as well as 2006. The following year was his best when he had a 56-0 record, however he suffered an upset loss during the national championship finals.
After graduating in 2007, Hendricks moved to Las Vegas to pursue an MMA career. He signed with Team Takedown with a few other wrestlers and made his debut at Masters of Cage. He would win that fight via a TKO and would follow up with another win in his next fight.
