Johny attended Edmon Memorial High School, and was a three time Oklahoma high school wrestling state champion and two time national wrestling champion during his time there. After matriculating, he would attend Oklahoma State University and had a 10-0 redshirt season in 2003. The following year he had a 37-7 record and would later win the Big 12 Title in 2005 as well as 2006. The following year was his best when he had a 56-0 record, however he suffered an upset loss during the national championship finals.

After graduating in 2007, Hendricks moved to Las Vegas to pursue an MMA career. He signed with Team Takedown with a few other wrestlers and made his debut at Masters of Cage. He would win that fight via a TKO and would follow up with another win in his next fight. In 2008, he made his television debut as part of HDNet Fights Xtreme Fighting League and had a first round submission victory, before World Extreme Cagefighting offered him a multi-fight deal; the contract would help to increase his net worth. He would win two more fights during his time there, including a TKO at WEC 37, and a unanimous decision at WEC 39.

After WEC removed the welterweight division, Hendricks moved to the UFC, and would make his debut against Amir Sadollah, the Ultimate Fighter 7 champion – with a counter and a flurry of punches, he would win his first fight in the UFC after 29 seconds. In 2009, Johny would fight Ricardo Funch and win via unanimous decision, and continued his winning streak against TJ Grant and Charlie Brenneman, getting a good 4-0 start. In 2010, he would fight Rick Story which he lost via unanimous decision during The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. The following year, he would face TJ Waldburger and won via a first round TKO which earned him “Knockout of the Night” honors. His net worth was rising steadily.

His next fight would be against Mike Pierce which he would win, and he would then fight against Jon Fitch, winning via knockout just 12 seconds into the round, which earned him another “Knockout of the Night” honor. He would win again with a knockout against Jake Ellenberger in 2013. His next fight would be controversial, as he would lose via split decision against Georges St-Pierre, which many believed he should have win. After St.-Pierre vacated the belt, Hendricks would fight Robbie Lawler for the championship, and would win at UFC 171 to become the champion via unanimous decision. At this point his net worth had continued to rise considerably, but after the fight, he had to go to surgery and would then face Lawler once again in a rematch which he lost.

Johny’s next fight would be against Stephen Thompson during February 2016 at UFC Fight Night 82, however, he would lose via TKO in the first round. He would lose his next fight and is expected to have a fight against Neil Magny at UFC 207.

For his personal life, it is known that Hendricks married Christina in 2009, and they have four children. He is also sponsored by Reebok.
