Runyan joined the 1996 NFL Draft and was selected by the Houston Oilers, 109th in the 4th round. He became a starter during his rookie season, and then moved with the team to Tennessee. In 1999, he along with the newly named Tennessee Titans squad reached Super Bowl XXXIV. Afterwards, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and was given a six-year $30 million contract which increased his net worth significantly, so becoming the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history during the time. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2002, and he re-signed with the team in 2006, subsequently setting a streak of having 190 consecutive regular season games, which is remarkable for an offensive lineman. He also started in all 18 playoff games his teams appeared in during his streak. In 2009, he had to undergo microfracture surgery, after which he played for the San Diego Chargers for five games before retiring.

In 2009, Jon announced his congressional bid, and would win, making him the fourth NFL player to be elected into Congress. He continued to be re-elected until 2014 when he decided not to seek re-election. He sponsored 15 pieces of legislation during his tenure, and supported the payroll tax cut, balanced budget amendment, and defunding of National Public Radio. He was also the sponsor to pass the amendment to the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2014. He worked on several committees including the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. Two years after ending his political run, he then started working with NFL as their Vice President of Policy and Rules administration. For his personal life, it is known that Jon married Loretta and they have three children. His son Jon Runyan Jr. has played for the Michigan Wolverines as an offensive line. Runyan also appeared in an episode of “It’s Always Sunny in a Philadelphia” as a construction worker.
