Jon and his family soon emigrated to Spain, and when Jon was 12 they emigrated to the USA, settling in Hialeah, Florida, where he went to Hialeah High School, from which he matriculated in 1979, and then enrolled at Miami Dade Community College, but soon transferred to the University of Miami.
