Alter began his journalistic career with “Newsweek”, which he served as their media critic. He started his own column in 1991 which was the first time the magazine allowed political commentary. He also started working as a correspondent to NBC News, continuing to work on both jobs, and in particular gaining a lot of popularity during election night in 2000. He also did an article on “Newsweek” about the September 11 attacks, which found a lot of popularity; his net worth was starting to increase. Soon he would become a well-known critic during the George W. Bush presidency, and in the meantime he wrote the book entitled “The Defining Moment” which talks about how Franklin D. Around this time, he began making numerous appearances on radio including “Imus in the Morning” and “The Al Franken Show”.

Jonathan also became a part of the documentary “Waiting for Superman”, then compiled the book “Between the Lines: A View Inside American Politics, People and Culture”, a collection of 20 years’ worth of his columns. During Obama’s presidency he wrote “The Promise: President Obama, Year One”, and “The Center Holds: Obama and His Enemies”. He would also continue to work for “Newsweek” until 2011, when he would leave the company to join Bloomberg. One of his recent projects is the show “Alpha House” which stars John Goodman; the series revolves around four Republican US Senators who live together. He also hosts a radio show as part of the network Radio Andy; his net worth is still rising.

For his personal life, it is known that Alter has been married to Emily Jane Lazar since 1986 and they have three children. He comes from a political family with his mother being the first woman elected to public office in Cook County, Illinois. His siblings and relatives also served in politics to some degree. Alter is a cancer survivor, previously battling against lymphoma. He also holds honorary degrees from Montclair State University and Utica College, and has an honorary doctorate from Western Connecticut State University.
