Jonathan attended Bishop Kenny High School, and during his time there, played as a first baseman as well as a pitcher. He became a three-time All-City honoree, and in his senior year, committed to Mississippi State University. He played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs mainly as a closer, and would appear in the 2001 and 2003 NCAA Tournaments. They also won the 2001 SEC Tournament. He played for the summer baseball team in Danville too, which he helped get a CICL championship. He was selected in the 2002 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics, but Jonathan opted to graduate from Mississippi State first.

Papelbon then joined the 2003 MLB Draft, and was selected by the Boston Red Sox. He started off as a pitcher for the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League as well as the Sarasota Red Sox, and then played for Double-A Portland before getting promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. He made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2005, and would get his first major league win two months after his debut. He also competed against the eventual World Series Champions, the Chicago White Sox during the 2005 post-season. The following year, Jonathan would win the “DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award”, garnering most of the votes. He would be instrumental in helping the Red Sox win the 2007 World Series, and so the following year he was given a one year $6.25 million contract which helped his net worth increase significantly.

In 2009, Papelbon was selected for the All-Star Game, although he experienced difficulties on and off the diamond during the season. This continued throughout the next year, though he made his 200th career save in 2011. After the Red Sox were eliminated from playoff contention, he became a free agent, and was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies for a four-year $50 million contract which continued to build his net worth. He finished his 2012 with a career high 64 games, 38 saves, and 92 strikeouts. He played with an injured hip the following season which affected his performance, but in 2014 he got his 300th career save, and he would then become the Phillies all-time save leader at 113. In 2015, Jonathan was traded to the Washington Nationals, however, altercations with team mates led him to being suspended. He was then traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, but after a few games he was released.

For his personal life, it is known that Papelbon has been married to Ashley Jefferies since 2005, and they have two children. He is an avid fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars American Football team.
