Boakai became a member of the Unity party, and prior to becoming the vice president of Liberia, served on several other political positions. First of all he was the Resident Manager of the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation from 1973 until 1980, after which he was the Managing Director of the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation until 1982.
