To begin with, he played football at Canton McKinley High School, then with the John Carroll Blue Streaks in the OAC in Division III of the NCAA.

Concerning the professional career, Josh McDaniels was an assistant coach at Michigan State for the 1999-2000 season before being hired by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in 2001 as a staff assistant. From 2002 to 2003 he served as a defensive assistant, then worked with the defensive backs in 2003. He participated in the first Patriot dynasty, winning Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX, including in 2005 working as the offensive coordinator, while remaining coach of quarterbacks too. In the 2007 season, McDaniels led his team to beat all records by scoring 67 touchdowns including 50 in the pass and 17 in the race. These results created rumours about the offensive coordinator so that he became head coach from the following season. After the failure at the Super Bowl XLII, he spent one more season with the Patriots.

At the beginning of 2009, the Denver Broncos named Josh McDaniels the main coach, on an $8 million contract for four seasons. From his debut with the Broncos, McDaniels encountered a problem with quarterback Jay Cutler – the Broncos started the season with six wins in a row, including an overtime victory over the Patriots. Yet, the Broncos’ season went to the wrong side, with a chain of defeats and a disappointing final record of eight victories for eight losses, and the 2010 season was even worse for McDaniels and after a final defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs, he was fired by the Broncos with a record of three wins and nine defeats. This episode with the Broncos marked the most drastic failure of his career.

In 2011, Josh McDaniels accepted the position of offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. At the end of the 2011 season, head coach Spagnuolo was fired from his post and the Rams informed McDaniels that despite his contract, he would not be held in the team’s frame in 2012 if he wished to leave. Thus, Josh McDaniels returned to the New England Patriots in the 2011 playoffs as an offensive coach assistant, and with Bill O’Brien leaving the franchise at the end of the season, the Patriots hired McDaniels as the team’s offensive coordinator. The coach added two more Super Bowls with successes at the Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks and against the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl LI.

Finally, in the personal life of the football coach, he married Laura McDaniels in 2002, and they have two children together.
