Kardinal is the son of Jamaican immigrants. The family spent his first two years in Scarborough, Ontario and then moved to Flemingdon Park, where they lived until he was 13 years old, eventually settling in Oakwood-Vaughan, where he went to West Hill Collegiate Institute. During his high school days, he was often a party organizer at the Alexandra Park Community Centre. After finishing high school, Kardinal enrolled at York University, but never finished his studies.

His love for rapping first came to show when he was only eight years old, and in no time he started participating in rap competition events. He made his first live appearance during Mandela’s first visit to Toronto following his release from prison in 1990. He was becoming more focused on his career and obtained the moniker Kardinal Offishall after he had learned of Cardinal Richelieu’s endeavors from the 17th century France.

He got his first record deal with Warner/Chappell Music Canada when he was 20 years old, and released his debut single “Naughty Dread”, then in 1997 his debut studio album “Eye & I”, through Capitol Hill Music, which garnered positive reviews, and the only single from the album “On wit da Show” reached No. 91 on the Canadian Singles Chart.

Kardinal re-entered the studio and recorded the EP “Husslin’”, which came out in 2000. After several singles from the EP became hits, he was offered a contract by the MCA Records. His first only album for MCA Records came out in 2001, entitled “Quest for Fire: Firestarter, Vol. 1”, and spawned such hits as “BaKardi Slang”, and “Ol Time Killin’”, and reachingd No. 57 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. His net worth was rising.

Unfortunately, his next album “Firestarter Vol 2: The F-Word Theory” was shelved since MCA Records folded and he was left without a record label, which jeopardized the progress of his career, but luckily Kardinal released his third album “Fire and Glory”, through Virgin Records in 2005, and in the meantime a mixtape “Kill Bloodclott Bill” (2004). He then again switched labels, this time to Geffen records, and his fourth album came out in 2008 “Not 4 Sale”, which became his highest charting album to date, reaching No. 7 on the US Rap chart, and No. 10 on the US R&B chart, selling more than 30,000 copies, and spawning such hits as “Dangerous”, which achieved triple platinum status in Canada, which added a considerable amount to his wealth. Most recently, “Kardi Gras, Vol. 1: The Clash” – his fifth album, came out in 2015 through Universal Records.

Aside from producing his own music, Kardinal has also worked on albums of several other notable musicians, such as Akon, Estelle, Frank n Dank, Maestro, Thrust, and Melanie Durrant, among many others, which also added to his wealth.

Furthermore, Kardinal has been the Creative Executive Director of Universal Musicanada’s A & R team since 2013.

Thanks to his successful career, Kardinal has received several prestigious awards, including four Juno Awards, and three SOCAN Awards, among many other recognitions.

Regarding his personal life, Kardinal has been married to Tashi Harrow, however, there are no further details about their marriage.

Kardinal is well known for his philanthropic activities; he is the supporter of the organization Free the Children and was part of the remix “Wavin’ Flag”, with several other Canadian artists, the profit of which was transferred in support of victims of the earthquake in Haiti. They raised more than $1 million.
