Pierson grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey. A huge Bob Dylan fan during her junior high school days, she became a member of a local folk group that recorded various protest material. When the Beatles made their way to the mainstream, her interests switched to rock ’n’ roll, and during high school she became a member of a band called the Sun Doughnuts.
During the ’70s, Pierson moved to Athens, Georgia, where she met and befriended Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, and the siblings Cindy and Ricky Wilson. In 1976 the group decided to form a band which they called The B-52s, adopted by a southern slang expression for the over-the-top beehive hairdo, that would become Pierson’s signature look. Despite having minimal previous performing experience, they stuck to the idea, and made their debut in 1977 at a Valentine’s Day party. Soon after, they began performing around New York City, quickly becoming established and recognised, especially for their wild performances and their mixed garage rock and new wave style. Kate’s net worth was becoming set.
After collecting a large following at dance clubs and colleges, in 1978 The B-52s released their single “Rock Lobster”, which became an instant hit, and their popularity reached such a high level that they were signed to a record deal by Warner Bros. The following year, their debut self-titled album came out, and tours across the USA and Europe followed. Pierson’s net worth started to rise.
In 1980 the band released their second album, “Wild Planet”, spawning hits such as “Private Idaho” and “Strobe Light”, and they became one of the most successful bands on the American new wave scene. They went on to release the albums “Party Mix!” and “Whammy!”, as well as an EP entitled “Mesopotamia”. While recording their next album, the band suffered a major tragedy, losing their guitarist Ricky Wilson, who died of AIDS in 1985, so the album “Bouncing Off the Satellites”, came out a year later. After a brief hiatus, in 1989 they released the album “Cosmic Thing”, their most successful album ever, and scoring a huge hit with the single “Love Shack”, their best-known song.
During the next decade, the band released only one album, the 1992 “Good Stuff”, but Pierson began collaborating with other artists, appearing as a guest vocalist with Iggy Pop on his single “Candy” as well as on R.E.M.’s hit “Shiny Happy People” and his several other singles as well. In the late ’90s, she formed a Japanese group called NiNa, along with singer Yuki Isoya and several other musicians, releasing one self-titled album in Japan, containing the hit singles “Happy Tomorrow” and “Aurora Tour”.
Pierson went on to perform and tour with B-52s during the 2000s, releasing their last album entitled “Funplex” in 2008. In the meantime, she opened her retro-styled motel complex called Kate’s Lazy Meadow Motel in upstate New York, followed by a companion motel, Kate’s Lazy Desert, in California. All added to her wealth.
In 2015, Kate released her first solo album, “Guitars and Microphones”, under her own label Lazy Meadow Music. The album, co-produced and co-written by Sia Furler, featured further contributions from Nick Valensi, Dallas Austin and Tim Anderson. She later released two singles, “Don’t Sting the Bee” and a cover of the single “Venus”.
In addition to music, Pierson has also been involved in acting. Aside from singing theme songs for several television and film projects as a member of The B-52s, she has appeared in the films “One Trick Pony” and “A Matter of Degrees”, as well as in the series “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” and “Flight of the Conchords”, all adding somewhat to her net worth.
In her private life, in 2015 Pierson married Monica Coleman, her long-time partner.
