Although born in Meridian, Ken spent his first five years of life in Walnut Grove, Mississippi, after which the family moved overseas to Heidelberg, Germany, with his father who was in the US Army. Later the family returned to the US, and he enrolled at Georgia State University, attending J. Mack Robinson College of Business, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in finance.
Soon after finishing his education, Ken got his first job at the North Carolina National Bank (NCNB); he was hired as a credit analyst and started climbing his way up the ladder in the bank, overseeing domestic and international operations when the NCNB acquired several other banks in 1991, to assume the name NationsBank. Seven years later NationsBank acquired BankAmerica and changed the name to Bank of America, which is now the second on the list of largest banks in the US by assets. Three years after the merger, Ken became CEO of the Bank of America on the retirement of the incumbent. He remained in this position until 31st December 2009, when he announced his retirement from the position. During his reign, Ken took some moves such as buying Merrill Lynch and Countrywide Financial, in deals that only jeopardized the existence of the Bank of America, and brought damage to the financial status of the bank. In order to recover the bank from unsuccessful strategies, Ken was forced to borrow $86 billion from the Federal Government.
Due to his inadvisable moves, he announced in September 2009 that he would leave his position at the end of the year. During his stay in the bank, Ken earned over $20 million in salaries, and for his retirement, he received around $130 million in various forms, which certainly increased his net worth.
Aside from the Bank of America, Ken has held several other positions in other financial businesses, including being a member of the Financial Service Forum, and Financial Services Roundtable.
