Kenneth Lonergan, born on the 16th of October 1962, of Irish descent through his father, and Jewish through his mother, and is an American director, screenwriter and playwright, who became known through his award-winning films including “Gangs of New York”, “You Can Count On me”, and most recently “Manchester by the Sea.”

Lonergan was born in The Bronx, New York City, to a physician father and psychiatrist mother who divorced when he was five, he has one brother with his parents and gained three stepsiblings when his mother remarried, plus his mother and stepfather had a child and adopted another.
Lonergan went to Walden School high school, known to have one of the strongest drama programs in Manhattan before it was closed. He later on went to Wesleyan University to train as a director and playwright, and also graduated from New York University’s Playwright Program.
Lonergan’s career started as early as 18 when the play that he wrote – “The Rennings Children” -was selected during the Young Playwright’s Festival in 1982 while he was still an undergraduate.
After finishing his education, Lonergan worked briefly as an industrial show writer, and a speechwriter, with with various companies including the Environmental Protection Agency, Fujifilm, and Weight Watchers. His early years as a writer helped start his career and also his net worth.
In the early ‘90s Lonergan went back to writing plays, and in 1993 wrote “Betrayal by Everyone”, but it was in 1996 that his play “This Is Our Youth” became a theatrical success, and was even nominated for Best Play at the “Drama Desk Award.” It was followed by “The Waverly Gallery” which was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Other plays that he wrote include “Lobby Hero” in 2001, “True to You” in 2004, and “The Starry Messenger” in 2009 to name a few. In 1994 Lonergan also entered the world of film and television, writing an episode for the series “Doug”. After writing for the film “Analyze This” in 1999, he was also eventually asked to write for “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” in 2000, adding to his net worth.
Lonergan’s breakthrough in film came in 2000, after he directed his own screenplay “You Can Count On Me”, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and won countless awards including the Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the Sundance Film Festival, National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Screenplay, and Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay among others.
After the success of “You Can Count On Me”, Lonergan also co-wrote for “Gangs of New York” – the film’s screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, the BAFTA and the Writers Guild of America. “Margaret” a movie he directed and wrote also became known as one of his most notable films.
Today, Lonergan is still one of the most sought-after writers and directors after 36 years in the business. His most recent work “Manchester by the Sea”, a film he wrote and directed, also became a critical success.
