1Being round people I love, who really love me, who i can really be myself with...that is what makes me feel beautiful.
2In real life, I'm just an actor. I play pretend. I tell stories. Your life is your story and the adventure ahead of you is the journey to fulfill your own purpose and potential.
3I realized that I don't have to be perfect. All I have to do is show up and enjoy the messy, imperfect and beautiful journey of my life. It's a trip more wonderful than I could have imagined.
4I didn't grow up thinking I was pretty: there was always a prettier girl than me. So I learned to be smart and tried to be funny and develop the inside of me, because I felt like that's what I had.
5I am inspired by women who cultivate their inner beauty as much as their outer beauty - who are unafraid to be both smart and sexy.
6My mother comes from a mixed-race background but from Jamaica, so she is partly English and Scottish and native American, but also descended from African slaves in the Caribbean. My dad's family is four or five generations Brooklyn-based, but before that from South Carolina, and we are not sure which members of his family were slaves and which were free blacks.
7[on her mother's reaction to her in role of Ophelia in a student production of "Hamlet"] I thought, "Wow." This woman who held me in her womb for nine months -- and knows exactly who I am -- for a moment something about this world allowed her to suspend her disbelief and believe I was some other person in some other time. I thought, "This is powerful.".
8My very first feature, Our Song (2000), was an independent film that was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. I always feel like I was able to start off my career on the right foot by starting off in independent film because that's where the real work ethic is and that's where the real artistry is, and every now and then you're lucky with a movie like Django Unchained (2012) to do a studio film that's filled with just as much artistry and passion.
9It's in the same way that I don't read my reviews. I try not to get involved in all that stuff because what's important to me is the work and however the work lives in the world is out of my control.
10I try not to let my politics limit me artistically, and you know say like "Well, I can't do that because I don't ever want to play a black prostitute" or "I can't do that because I don't ever want to play, you know a drug addict." I really try not to do that. What's important to me is to make sure my characters ring true that they reflect a trueness to society because if I can bring out the true humanity of a character than I'm not perpetuating a stereotype I'm actually revealing a truth.
11I don't think I'm even close to fulfilling my potential. And I think also that, unlike a pianist or a flutist, an actor has an instrument that is constantly changing.
1Gave birth to her 2nd child at age 39, a son named Caleb Kelechi Asomugha on October 5, 2016. Child's father is her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha.
2Jennifer Lopez was her high school dancing teacher.
3Washington was cast in the role of Mahandra McGinty in the mid-2000s TV series Wonderfalls and played Mahandra in the original pilot, but when the show was picked up, she was recast and her scenes in the pilot were reshot with the actress who replaced her, Tracie Thoms.
4I'm the luckiest broad in Hollywood now. To be the lead actor on Scandal (2012) and to be in the highest-earning Quentin Tarantino movie [Django Unchained (2012)] - I don't get asked for anything more.
5Ranked #65 on Maxim's magazine's Hot 100 Women of 2014 list.
6Returned to work 3 months after giving birth to her daughter Isabelle to begin filming the 4th season of Scandal (2012).
7One of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World. [April 2014]
8Was 7 months pregnant with her daughter Isabelle when she completed filming the 3rd season of Scandal (2012).
9Gave birth to her 1st child at age 37, a daughter named Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha on April 21, 2014. Child's father is her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha.
10(June 24, 2013) Married her boyfriend of a year Nnamdi Asomugha.
11Kerry Washington is a cousin of Milly Silva, who ran to be New Jersey's lieutenant governor in 2013. Silva was on the Democratic ticket with State Senator Barbara Buono, who was running for governor. Washington campaigned for Buono and Silva.
12Regularly attends church, but also insists to reporters that "I don't talk about my personal life.".
13Growing up in the Bronx, she attended the same local Boys and Girls Club of America as Jennifer Lopez.
14Is of Jamaican ancestry on her mother's side.
15Has played Jamie Foxx's wife in two films: Ray (2004) and Django Unchained (2012).
16Studied acting in New York City at Michael Howard Studios.
17Was accepted into Yale University and Dartmouth College but declined both.
18She was engaged to actor David Moscow from October 2004 to March 2007.
19Also graduated from the private, girls' Spence School in New York City, in 1994 where she acted in plays. Gwyneth Paltrow, Emmy Rossum and Sally Pressman also went to Spence.
20Is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of George Washington University's theater program in 1998.
21Is the only child of a real-estate agent father and a mother who is an educator.
