Johnson`s father, Lawrence, died when Kevin was only three years old, and as a result, he was raised by his mother, Georgia, and her parents. He went to the Sacramento High School, where he played both basketball and baseball, but was much better in basketball, averaging 32.5 points per game, and earning the Northern California Player of the Year award.

After matriculating, Kevin enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley on a sports scholarship, to play basketball for the university team. He became one of the best players in his position, and received several awards, including the First-team All-Pac-10 selection in 1986 and 1987. He also played baseball, and was selected in the 23rd round as a shortstop in the 1986 Draft by the Oakland Athletics. However, he decided for basketball instead.

In the 1987 NBA Draft, he was selected as the 7th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, which marked the start of his professional career, and of his net worth.

However, his playing time was limited, as he saw action in only 53 games, of which 3 were starts, as the main point guard was Mark Price, who averaged 16.0 points per game, and 6.0 assists. In February 1988, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, alongside Mark West and Tyron Corbin with the addition of a future draft pick to the Phoenix Suns, for Larry Nance, Mike Sanders, and a future draft pick. His numbers improved immediately, and he averaged 12.6 points and 8.7 assists per game. In the next season, his numbers became higher, averaging a double double, 20.4 points and 12.7 assists. In the next three seasons, Kevin averaged a double double, which earned him a new contract, increasing further his net worth.

He played for the Suns until 1998, and alongside Charles Barkley became one of the best players of the franchise; although the two never won the title, they played in the finals in 1992-1993 season, but lost to Chicago Bulls and their star player and Hall of Famer Michael Jordan 4:2 in the final series. He retired in 1998, but decided to come back for the 1999-2000 playoffs to replace the injured Jason Kidd. Although they passed the first round, the Suns lost in the second to Los Angeles Lakers, and their star in the making Kobe Bryant.
After these playoffs, Kevin retired for good.

During his career, Kevin received several prestigious awards and set several records as well; he was selected three times for the All-Star Game in 1990, 1991 and 1994, and in 1989 he was named the Most Improved Player. Furthermore, he is the third in assists with a 10.0 average, behind John Stockton and Magic Johnson, and was inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor in 2001, among many other achievements.
As early as 2008, Kevin was elected as Mayor of Sacramento, becoming the first African-American in the post, and in 2012 he was re-elected, which also increased his net worth.

Regarding his personal life, Kevin has been married to Michelle Rhee since 2011, however there are no further details about their marriage.
Kevin is also recognized as philanthropist; he started the St. Hope foundation, which focuses on education. Also he has launched several more projects, including STAND UP, Sacramento Steps Forward, Sacramento READS! and others, all of them focusing on improving education for underprivileged children and adults as well.
