Born in Nepal, her family moved to the USA when Kiran was seven months old. Her name means “ray of light” in the Sanskrit language; her father, Hom, is Hindu from the Middle Hills of Nepal, while her mother, Nancy, has Ukrainian, German and Dutch roots. The two met in Nepal during Nancy’s volunteering as a part of the Peace Corps. The Chetry family settled in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where Kiran went to Montgomery Blair High School.
