Born Kiran Carrie Chetry on the 26th August 1974 in Patan, Bagmati, Nepal, she is a retired journalist, best known to the world for her work on the Fox News Channel from 2001 until 2007, and for serving as CNN’s American Morning anchor in the period from 2007 until 2011.

Born in Nepal, her family moved to the USA when Kiran was seven months old. Her name means “ray of light” in the Sanskrit language; her father, Hom, is Hindu from the Middle Hills of Nepal, while her mother, Nancy, has Ukrainian, German and Dutch roots. The two met in Nepal during Nancy’s volunteering as a part of the Peace Corps. The Chetry family settled in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where Kiran went to Montgomery Blair High School. After matriculation, Kiran enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park’s College of Journalism, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism.

Her career started in 1995 when she joined News 21 in Rockville, Maryland; she stayed there only for a year before she became a part of the WICU-TV in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she served as the main anchor, and health reporter. A year after she joined, her great work was recognized with the Best Enterprise Reporting award from the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association in 1997, for her reports regarding teen smoking, collected in the series “Young and Hooked”.
