Kris Kristofferson Net Worth $80 Million

Kris is the son of a Swedish father, Lars Henry Kristofferson, and his wife, Mary Ann, who is of English, Scottish-Irish, Swiss-German, Dutch and German ancestry. His father served in the US Army Air Corps, and as Kris was growing up, Lars actually prepared him for the army.

Kris attended San Mateo High School, after which he enrolled at Pomona College, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature. During his college years, Kris excelled in various sports, including rugby, American Football and track and field as well. Thanks to his accomplishments, Kris appeared in the Sports Illustrated edition “Faces in the Crowd”.

After graduating, Kris received a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University and became a student at Merton College. It was there that he met people who would help him launch his career; with the help of the poet Michael Fried, and manager Larry Parnes, Kris reached a deal with the Top Rank Records, and recorded several songs, however, Kris’s early recordings had little success.

However, he finished his studies with a B. Phil degree in English literature.

Following his graduation, Kris joined the military in 1960 on the urging from his father, eventually reaching the rank of Captain and serving as a helicopter pilot, before leaving the army in 1965 and starting a band – his family consequently abandoned him!

He moved Nashville to support his musical beginnings, and held several odd jobs, including sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios. He came in touch with June Carter, wife of Johnny Cash, and gave her an audio tape to pass on to Cash. However, Cash stashed the tape with numerous others he got day after day, so Kris took the matter into his own hands, and landed a helicopter in Cash’s front yard. This resulted in a collaboration between the two; Cash decided to give a chance to Kris’s song “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”. The song became an immediate hit, and the Kris was awarded songwriter of the year at the country music awards.

Working as a commercial helicopter pilot for Petroleum Helicopters International and writing songs whenever an inspiration would come, Kris slowly became recognized in the country rock music scene, with songs such as “Jody and the Kid”, “From the Bottle to the Bottom”, “Once More with Feeling”, and many others, however, his recordings didn’t reach full potential.

His debut self-titled album came out in 1970, but the sales were low, despite reaching the top 10 on the US Country chart. However, his next album – “The Silver Tongued Devil and I” – achieved gold status in the US and peaked at No. 4, while his album “Jesus Was a Capricorn” topped the charts and also achieved gold status, increasing his wealth to a large degree.

Kris remains active until the present day, and so far has released 18 studio albums, but since the late ‘70s hasn’t had any notable success, except for the album “Closer to the Bone” (2009), which reached No. 29 on the US Country chart. In addition to his work as a solo artist, he was a part of the country rock group The Highwaymen, with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson – the group released three studio albums between 1985 to 1995, including the eponymous album “Highwayman”, which topped the US Country chart and achieved platinum status in Australia, USA, and gold in Canada, increasing Kristofferson’s net worth considerably.

Thanks to his success in music, Kris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004, having already been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985.

Aside from his musical career, Kris is also an accomplished actor; he has more than 115 titles credited to his name, and is still active in the industry. He made his debut in a minor role in the drama “The Last Movie” in 1971, and the next year had the starring role in the drama “Cisco Pike” (1972). Throughout the ‘70s he had a number of successful appearances, including in “Blume in Love”, “Vigilante Force” and “A Star Is Born”, for which he received a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, among others. In 1984 he featured in the musical drama “Songwriter”, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, and in 1992 starred in the romantic comedy “Christmas in Connecticut”, with Dyan Cannon, and Tony Curtis, while in 1998 he portrayed Whistler in the first installment of the action horror film franchise “Blade”, reprising his role in the sequels “Blade 2” in 2002, and “Blade: Trinity” in 2004. In 2001 he was Karubi in the sci-fi action adventure “Planet of the Apes”, while four years later he portrayed Dr. Thomas Becker in the sci-fi mystery drama “The Jacket”, next to Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley and Daniel Craig. In 2011 he featured in the family drama “Dolphin Tale” (2011) and appeared in its sequel three years later, meantime starring in the action-drama “Midnight Stallion” (2013).

In recent years, Kris featured in the drama mystery “The Red Maple Leaf” (2016), and the western “Traded” (2017), further increasing his net worth. In 2006, Kris became a part of the Texas Film Hall of Fame, thanks to his extreme success in western films.

Regarding his personal life, Kris has been married to Lisa Meyers since 1983; the couple has five children together. He has two marriages behind him, firstly with Frances Beer from 1961 until 1973, which produced two children. He then married singer Rita Coolidge in 1973, and had two children with her, before they divorced in 1980.

Since 2013, Kris has been suffering from short-term memory loss, and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, but it was later revealed as a mistake and is actually Lyme disease.

1(on Retired General Wesley Clark's bid for the Democratic nomination in 2004) Just when the world is being dragged into the death spiral of an unending cycle of violence by a visionless, coldblooded collection of think-tank warriors goose-stepping their way into the new millennium with a stunning lack of respect for human rights, the environment, or international law, along comes a man with the proven credentials of intelligence, integrity, and courage singularly equipped by his spirit and experience to lead us out of this mess. Don't listen to what the lying liars say about him; listen to what he says. Wesley Clark is a prayer answered.
2I should have been dead many times over. The way I used to fly attack-choppers I should have died. When I got numerous concussion from football I should have died. When I continued to box even after loosing my memory I should have died - they're trying to tear your head off for Christ sake. I've rolled cars many times, been drunk on a motorcycle too often. It's embarrassing now, sitting here, knowing you took all the good things for granted, that I didn't cherish my life a bit more.
3Recently, my oldest son, Kris, and I were coming out of an airport, and I saw this little kid I'd seen back at the gate with his mother, and I said, 'Look-that's the kid who was coming out of the gate with us.' And Kris said, 'Dad, you're getting old. You noticed the little kid and I was looking at his mother.
4I think I'm a much better father as an older man than I was with my first kids. Occasionally, I have to yell at the little guys, but they don't take me seriously. 'Listen to the old guy,' they say. 'Isn't he great? He's mad.'
5I grew up in a time when people believed in duty, honor and country. My grandfathers were both officers. My father was a General in the Air Force. My brother and I were both in the Army. I've always felt a kinship with soldiers; I think it's possible to support the warrior and be against the war.
6[on A Star Is Born (1976)] (Filming) It was like Ranger School.
7Never give up, which is the lesson I learned from boxing. As soon as you learn to never give up, you have to learn the power and wisdom of unconditional surrender, and that one doesn't cancel out the other; they just exist as contradictions. The wisdom of it comes as you get older.
8I was a slow starter. I mean, I grew up in the fifties, and, jeez, I wasn't even laid in high school. Looking back on it, I didn't know anything, which was kind of unfortunate for my first couple of wives. When I found out that girls like sex as much as guys, I was, for many years, feeling like that was my function. I mean, I wasn't as bad as Clinton, but I was led by the pecker.
9The desire to be fucked-up probably leaves you, but the desire to be high never does.
10Freedom is just another word: It seems to get truer the older I get. It makes me think about the time when my apartment got robbed and everything was gone and I was disowned by my family. I owed money to a hospital and I owed my wife five hundred a month for child support and I thought, "I'm losing my job." I hadn't any money, I hadn't anything going for me, but it was liberating. I was in this Evangeline Motel, like something out of "Psycho", a filthy place, just sitting there with this neon Jesus outside the door, in the swamps outside of Lafayette, Louisiana, and I thought, "Fuck. I'm on the bottom, can't go any lower" -- and from then on, man, I drove my car to the airport, left it there, and never went back to get it. Went to Nashville and called this friend of mine, Mickey Newberry, and told him I'd just got fired, and he said, "Great. Johnny Cash is shooting a new TV show. Come up, and we can pitch him some songs." The next moment, they cut three of my songs, and they were hits. I never had to go back to work again.
11(on Merle Haggard) When I started getting recognized, a lot of people saw me and Merle as antagonists, because of the nature of "Okie from Muskogee", "The Fightin' Side of Me" and some of the political stuff that I had done, I guess. That was never the case. As far as I'm concerned, he's the closest thing to Hank Williams walking the streets today.
12(on the current state of America and the world) I remember getting this creepy feeling back when I was doing "Heaven's Gate" which was about the Cattleman's Association getting government backup to go in with mercenaries and kill a bunch of civilians. I remember thinking at the time that maybe there's always been a dark part of this American dream where money was more important than people. That's exactly what's going down now. The money involved in this Iraq reconstruction is shameless. It's right in your face and everyone can see it. I don't know if its apathy or if it's more a feeling of powerlessness. What can we do? They elected Bush without him really winning the election. The Supreme Court is stacked and we're fixing to stack it worse. All this destruction is done in our name. And the simple things that Bush keeps saying are so embarrassing. He says, "These are evil people who hate peace and hate freedom and that's why they're blowing themselves up." Christ.
13(on Heaven's Gate (1980)) I was real surprised to see the critics line up on the side of the philistines so fast. To me, the film was about the American dream, and it shows one of the basic flaws in the dream - the idea that money is more important than people. I'll be proud of that movie as long as I'm in the business. It was a work of art. Michael Cimino, the director, says he's unrepentant and plans to sin again, and I hope he gets the chance.
14[on working with Barbra Streisand on A Star Is Born (1976)] Filming with Streisand is an experience which may have cured me of movies.
15The number-one rule of the road is never go to bed with anyone crazier than yourself. You will break this rule, and you will be sorry.
16I think between us, Bill Clinton and I have settled any lingering myths about the brilliance of Rhodes scholars.

19It is speculated that either Kristofferson, Warren Beatty, Cat Stevens or Mick Jagger "inspired" the famous song "You're so Vain" by Carly Simon.
