Larry Kramer, born on the 25th of June 1935, is an American author and playwright, who became famous for his works including “Women in Love”, “Faggots”, and “The Normal Heart”. He also became known for his active participation in fighting for the rights of the LGBT community.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Kramer came from a small Jewish family. During his high school years, he also started becoming open with his sexuality, and so sexually involved with his male friends. He later attended Yale University, where he also experienced depression for feeling like being the only gay person in the school. However, he was able to overcome his depression, and graduated with a degree in English.

Kramer’s career started at 23 when he got a job at Columbia Pictures working as a teletype operator. With his persistence, he was moved into the story department, where he was able to rework some scripts. One of his earliest works was “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”, and other movies that he also worked on included “Women in Love” and “Lost Horizon”. His early years in the film industry helped his career and his net worth considerably.

In 1973, Kramer started creating stage plays, and decided to integrate themes of homosexuality into his works. His works as a playwright include “Sissies’ Scrapbook”, “A Minor Dark Age”, “The Normal Heart”, “Just Say No, A Play about a Farce”, “The Destiny of Me” and “The Furniture of Home”. His work for “The Destiny of Me” even earned him the right to become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and won him two Obie awards. His works in the stage production also helped in his wealth.

In 1988, Kramer was diagnosed with Hepatitis B leading him to need a liver, but additionally it was also discovered that he had HIV, making it hard for him to earn a place in the liver transplant list. His diagnosis with HIV and the hardships he faced with the disease highly affected the themes in his works.

Kramer’s HIV diagnosis helped inspire the novel “Faggot”, and the books “Reports from the Holocaust: The Story of an AIDS Activist”. His condition and his way of life also led him to become an active fighter for gay rights and people diagnosed with HIV. He became the cofounder of Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power.

Today, Kramer continues to write with “The Normal Heart” and “The American People Volume 1, Search for My Heart” as some of his most recent works.

In terms of his personal life, Kramer is married to architectural designer David Webster. They’ve been together since 1991, and married in 2013.
