Larry matriculated from high school in 1986, then attended Reed College and studied philosophy. During his time at Reed, he became very interested in the internet and its capabilities for publishing. He had the idea of using the internet as a free network of tutors and students to help teaching beyond the traditional school setting. He graduated in 1991, and would then attend Ohio State University to get his master’s degree four years later. He went on to study for his Doctor of Philosophy from Ohio State University, getting it in 2000.
Sanger first worked on the web-based encyclopedia Nupedia, which was written by volunteer contributors. He worked as the editor-in-chief of the website, but would soon become its overseer. However, the website’s progress was slow and this led to a proposal for a wiki to be created to make article development quicker. In 2001, Wikipedia was officially announced and was initially intended as a collaborative wiki. However, a lot of Nupedia’s experts didn’t want to participate in the project, but Wikipedia quickly took off and grew faster than Nupedia. However, a lot of problems soon surfaced with people starting to troll the website. This led to Larry proposing a stronger emphasis for expert editors, but with a lack of support, he eventually left the project as well as Nupedia, which would shut down in 2003. After leaving Wikipedia, he’s been very critical of its accuracy, and wrote critical articles against it and Jimmy Wales.
Sanger then worked as a lecturer at Ohio State University, teaching philosophy until 2005. He was then hired by the Digital Universe Foundation, where he worked as Director of Distributed Content Programs. He helped edit “Encyclopedia of Earth”, and would then work on a new encyclopedia program called Citizendium; it officially launched in 2007 and would hope to remove the flaws Wikipedia had. However, the website failed to get the same traction that Wikipedia did, and its editing model proved to be difficult, and many of its experts would soon leave the site. Larry also ceased working on the website and stepped down as the editor-in-chief of the project. In 2013, he announced the project Infobitt which is a crowd-sourced news portal which went online in 2014, however, the project ran out of money in 2015.
For his personal life, it is known that Larry married a lady he met online, in 2001 and he resides in Columbus, Ohio with his wife as well as their two children. He is a supporter of baby reading and started teaching his children to read before the age of two.
