LaVar Arrington is the middle son of Michael, who was an ordained minister, and Carolyn, who worked as a special education teacher. He grew up in his hometown, where he attended North Hills Senior High School, and distinguished himself as a running back and linebacker in the school football team, so as a senior he was named the Parade National Player of the Year in 1996, and USA Today Pennsylvania Player of the Year. Besides that, he was also the second player in Pennsylvania Class, as he finished his high school career with 4,357 yards on 711 carries, and 72 touchdowns. He also excelled in basketball and track & field, but he decided to continue playing football when he enrolled at Penn State University. While at college, he won several honors, such as the Lambert Award, Chuch Bednarik Award, etc. In 1998 he was named as a first-team All-American.

LaVar’s professional playing career began in 2000, when he was selected as the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, by the Washington Redskins. He stayed with the Redskins until 2005, which largely increased his net worth. Upon arrival he signed a rookie contract, of which details are not publicly known, but four years later, LaVar signed a contract worth $68 million over eight years, which only increased further his net worth. During his five years with the Redskins, LaVar played in 78 games, considering that in the last two seasons, LaVar had numerous problems with injuries which kept him sidelined. He made 401 tackles, and had 4 interceptions, which only helped beef-up the Redskins’ defense.

Still, he and Redskins’ coach Joe Gibbs had several arguments, and as a result, LaVar bought out his contract, and became a free agent.

Troubled with injuries, only a few clubs wanted to sign him, and he chose the New York Giants, signing a contract worth $49 million over seven years, but his luck turned back on him again, as he suffered another injury which left him sidelined for the entire season, which eventually led to his release, and then retirement in 2007.

During his short, but still successful career, marred with injuries, LaVar won several awards and recognitions, including three Pro Bowl appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and he was also named into the Second-team All-Pro in the same seasons.

Following his retirement, LaVar pursued a career as a broadcaster, finding engagement at the Comcast Sports Net, working on pre-game and post-game shows.
