Lee started playing golf in his teens, and with the help of his father, John, who also picked up golf clubs to inspire young Lee, started playing at a decent level. Although he started to play golf a bit later than his peers, two years into competing he won the junior championship of Nottinghamshire, while in 1990 he won the Peter McEvoy Trophy, his first amateur tournament.
