Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, also known as Lenny D and Leo, was born on 11 November 1974, in Los Angeles, California USA, of German (mother, herself apparently of Russian parentage) and half-German/half-Italian (father) descent. He is now a very well-known  actor, TV and film producer, who after a distinguished career to date and several nominations for an Academy Award, finally won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2016 for his performance in the film “The Revenant”.

So just how rich is Leonardo DiCaprio? Sources estimate that Leonardo’s net worth is over $250 million as of early 2016, thanks to the many noted  roles he has played in films during a career now spanning over 25 years. His assets include a home in Los Angeles, California; an apartment in Lower Manhattan, New York City; an island in Belize, apparently on which to build an eco-friendly resort; and in 2014, he bought Dinah Shore’s  original residence in Palm Springs, California.

Leonardo’s mother is a former secretary, while his father is a comic artist and also comic books distributor. However, his parents divorced when Leonardo was nine years old, after which Leo  lived mainly with his mother and was only seldom visited by his father. He was educated at Seeds Elementary School, but dropped out of high school, only later earning his GED. His talent as an actor was shown early, however, as DiCaprio started his acting career and building-up his net worth making commercials, then in small parts in several TV series, including “Parenthood” for which part he received his first nomination, a Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in 1991.

DiCaprio’s career on the big screen also began in 1991, when he played Josh in the movie entitled “Critters 3” directed by Kristine Peterson, but his breakthrough was to come the following year when he was selected by Robert De Niro to star in “This Boy’s Life”. Until recently, DiCaprio’s next film was probably his best known, as “Titanic”(1997) directed by James Cameron became the biggest box office success ever. He followed that in 1998 by playing “The Man in the Iron Mask”, and then appearing as Frank Abagnale in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can”(2002), depicting perhaps the greatest fraudster of all time. Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York”(2002), based on the Big Apple’s crime wave of the mid- to late-1800s, and which won the Oscar for Best Picture was another hit. Of course Leonardo’s net worth was grew substantially from these performances.

His next particularly notable role was playing Howard Hughes in another Scorsese film “The Aviator”(2004), a financial as well as critical success winning a Golden Globe award, and an Oscar nomination. This was topped at the box office by another collaboration with Martin Scorsese, “The Departed” in 2006, and the same year he was nominated for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for that performance, and that in “Blood Diamond”.

DiCaprio’s net worth continued to rise, as he starred in “What’s Eating Gilbert’s Grape?”, “This Boy’s Life” and “Inception” in 2010, the latter grossing over $800 million at the box office, and putting $59 million in Leonardo’s pocket as a result of being largely paid according to the film’s success. “Django Unchained” in 2012 was another success, this time a western for which Leonardo was again nominated for a Golden Globe. Two other noted films were “The Great Gatsby”(2013), and another Scorsese production, “The Wolf of Wall Street” also in 2013, relating the true story of fraud and money-laundering in the 1990s. His crowning glory was finally securing the appreciation and respect of his fellow actors with his Oscar for “The Revenant” in February 2016.

During his acting career Leonardo has received many other awards, plus nominations, including five times for a Best Actor Oscar. He has been nominated for the MTV Movie Award 17 times and won twice, furthermore, he received the Teen Choice Award twice – for the movie “Catch Me If You Can” and for “Shutter Island” released in 2010. In 2005, DiCaprio was awarded the commander of the ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French Ministry of Culture for his contributions to the arts.

Leonardo has now been involved in over 40 films and half a dozen TV productions, relatively heavy work in 25 years especially considering the magnitude of shooting some of them, but demonstrating the demand for his abilities. Today DiCaprio’s net worth continues to rise as he remains one of the most respected and sought-after actors of recent years.

In his personal life, Leonardo is well-known for dating a string of ladies in the entertainment industry of considerable interest to the media, and including actress Bijou Phillips, model Kristen Zang, British model and socialite Emma Miller, Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen, Israeli model Bar Refaeli, actress Blake Lively, model Erin Heatherton,  German model Toni Garrn and most recently model Kelly Rohrbach, quite a collection but no-one owns him, yet – he remains single and based in southern California.

Leonardo is a committed environmentalist, and one of his hobbies is bird watching on which he spends a big part of his free time. As the supporter of ecological life, DiCaprio owns a Tesla Roadster battery electric vehicle.
