Of Dinka ethnicity, Luol had a tough childhood; growing up in a civil war-racked Sudan, his father managed to move the family to Egypt and later emigrate to Brixton, South London. While in Egypt, Luol was coached basketball by Manute Bol, then once settling in London, he continued to play basketball at St Mary’s RC High School, where he also got interested in football, but basketball remained his first love. Aside from high school basketball, Luol also joined Brixton Basketball Club, and was selected to played for England’s team at the European Junior Men’s Qualifying Tournament. He dominated the court with 40 points and 14 rebounds per game, which earned him the MVP of the tournament award. Thanks to his great plays, England qualified for the European National Tournament, in which he again showcased his dominance with 34 points per game; another MVP award was in his hands.

Becoming a star at just 13 years old, Luol was recruited by Blair Academy in New Jersey, and moved to the USA. The improved competition didn’t change anything for Luol, as he continued with his great plays and as a result, became one of the top recruits in his class. After a successful high school career, Luol committed to play basketball for Duke University Blue Devils under Mike Krzyzewski. In his first and only season, Luol averaged 15.1 points per game, which earned him USBWA National Freshman of the Year award.

He then declared for the 2004 NBA Draft, and was chosen by the Phoenix Suns but then traded to the Chicago Bulls, and signed his rookie scale contract and so became a professional. In his rookie season, Luol played in 61 games before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. Nevertheless, he helped his team with 11.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game, which earned him NBA All-Rookie First Team selection.

In his second season, Luol improved his numbers, averaging 14.3 points per game alongside 6.6 rebounds, and becoming one of the best players of in the team. He played his best basketball in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons in which he earned NBA All-Star selection, and he was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in January 2014 for two future second-round draft picks. His contract was expiring at the season’s end, and he decided to join Miami Heat signing a two-year deal worth $19 million, which added a considerable amount to his net worth. During his time in Miami, Luol’s numbers declined from his previous standard, dropping to 12.3 points per game. After his contract expired in 2016, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, signing a contract worth $72 million over four years, which significantly increased his net worth, but his numbers dropped further, and since the end of 2016-2017 season, Luol hasn’t appeared in a single game for the Lakers. The front-office is now looking to end the contract with Luol, or make delayed payments since they need salary cap space for future signings.

Aside from a club career, after becoming a naturalized citizen in 2006, Luol has also played for the British national team in several competitive events, but without much success.

When it comes to his personal life, Luol tends to keep his most intimate details hidden from the public eyes, therefore no reliable information is available about Luol’s romantic relationships, except that back in 2006, he was in a relationship with the novelist Kola Boof.

He is well-known for his philanthropic activities; he has worked with such charities as School Home Support, Lost Boys of Sudan, and World Food Programme, while also toured Africa, Europe, and Asia with the NBA during their Basketball Without Borders Tour.
